STANDISH, Maine –The Chargers baseball team is leaving Standish, Maine with a sweep of the Monks on Friday to improve their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record to 7-4. Both wins keep Colby-Sawyer in the fourth spot in the standings.
Rapid Recap Game One (5-4):
- The Chargers took a quick lead in the first inning as graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) grounded out to score sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) who reached with a single. The Monks battled back in the fourth inning scoring a pair of runs on a pair of extra base hits to jump ahead by a 2-1 margin. Sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) quickly evened the score again with a RBI base hit to score first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) to knot the game at 2-2 in the 5th.
- The Monks hopped back in front in the bottom of the frame with a RBI single to centerfield. The lead ballooned to 4-2 on a RBI double by Vinny O'Leary. In the top half of the seventh the Chargers clutched up with three runs crossing the plate to take the lead. It started with a RBI double by first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) to plate first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.). Schmitt continued his stellar hitting this week with a bloop two RBI single with two outs to put the visitors in the lead. Sophomore Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) and junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) shut down the Monks to close it out for the Chargers win.
On The Mound:
- First year Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) started the game for the Chargers tossing 4.2 innings of work allowing three runs while striking out four. Powers picked up the win with 2.1 innings pitched striking out three allowing a single run. Mullen added his fifth save of the season with four strikeouts in two innings.
At the Plate:
- Schmitt played hero going 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Chargers. Sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) tallied a 3-for-4 day with a double, while Roeger added a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored and a ribby.
Rapid Recap Game 2 (8-6):
- The Monks quickly jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single. Colby-Sawyer quickly took control with six runs in the top half of the second inning. It started with a RBI single by sophomore Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine), followed by a two RBI blast by Schmitt. Dennis and Roeger each added RBI singles as the visitors took the commanding 6-1 lead.
- The third inning brought another blast as McLeer lifted a ball of the Monks scoreboard to extend the Charger lead to 8-1 after three innings. The Monks chipped away with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth as the game was 8-3 headed into the final third of the game. In the bottom of the ninth Dennis went on to close things out, but the Monks found a way to battle for three runs to cut the lead to 8-6. Mullen came back in for the second-straight game and a diving snare by Schmitt closed out the game with a Chargers 8-6 win.
On the Mound:
- Watson pitched six innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the year allowing just one earned run with a pair of punchouts. First year Hayden Goerlich (Amherst, N.H.) was next with two innings and two strikeouts while not allowing a run. Dennis ran into trouble allowing three runs with a strikeout, but Mullen picked up the save for the Charger win.
- With the sixth save of the season Mullen is now the program record holder in saves at Colby-Sawyer.
At the Plate:
- Schmitt paced the offense again going 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the homer and a run scored. McLeer was great in centerfield going 3-for-4 with a blast and three RBIs and two runs scored. Roeger added another two hit game with a run and RBI.
