NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up its seventh Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win on the season this Wednesday beating Norwich by a score of 14-13.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers came out swinging as junior captain Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) weaved the Cadets defense to pocket the first goal of the game early. After another Colby-Sawyer goal, the Cadets fired back with three goals of their own. Junior captain Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) managed to find the back of the net to even up the score 3-3 headed into the second quarter.
- Colby-Sawyer picked up where they left off with another quick goal from Hanson. With a defensive battle going back and forth, first year Madeline Knight (Pownal, Maine) pocketed a clean goal to extend the Chargers lead. Sophomore Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) and senior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) put in back-to-back goals extending the lead further. The Cadets closed out the Chargers offensive stint by adding to their goal tally and narrowing down Colby-Sawyer's lead to only 7-6 headed into the second half.
- With a close first half, the Cadet's didn't let off the brakes by putting in four consecutive goals to start the third quarter. This did not impact the Chargers determination as they started to mount a comeback of their own. Hanson ran the distance of the field to tally another hat trick on the year, while graduate student Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) found the back of the net to close the gap to one goal. The Chargers found themselves down 9-11 headed into the last period of play.
- Facing a deficit headed into the fourth quarter, Colby-Sawyer came out determined and more motivated than ever with first year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H) finding the back of the net in under a minute of play. Graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) was a two-way player this quarter notching two huge caused turnovers and tallying a goal late to even things up 12-12. Bronson pocketed her second goal of the day giving the Chargers their first lead since the middle of the second quarter. The Cadets managed to tie it up again with a minute to go, but that did not stop sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H) from closing out the game 14-13 with a last second goal securing the win for the Chargers.Â

"Today the team came together to support each other on the field," explained junior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.). "We had to fight the entire game and it was awesome to see so many different players put the ball in the back of the net to come away with this win!"

- The Chargers had five different goal scorers in the fourth quarter to ignite their comeback win. Heather Hanson added put up three goals on the day, along with four grounders and four caused turnovers. Soph Kuhlthau, Elena Bronson, and Sydney Stevens each added two goals extending their season totals. On the defensive end junior Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) had six grounders and four caused turnovers on the day.
- Junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up the win today with a solid performance in the net. The junior posted 6 saves on the day and came up clutch for the Chargers for another conference win.Â
