Chargers Fall in Extra Innings Against New England College

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team fell in extra innings on Wednesday by a 5-4 final.

Rapid Recap
  • The Pilgrims picked up an early lead scoring off of an RBI ground out from Johnny Cannavo in the third inning. The visitors would continue to extend their lead into the 4th inning behind an RBI single from Brady Phillibotte followed by a score from Jason Figuereo on a wild pitch from senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.). In the fifth inning Rogers would tab his 100th career strike out but the bats stayed hot for the Pilgrims as they extended their lead to 4-0.
  • The Chargers pulled themselves out of their scoring drought in the 6th inning with sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) getting a spot on the bases and scoring off of a sacrifice fly from first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) before the Pilgrims retired the side.
  • Junior Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) would come in to keep the game within 3 in the top of the ninth notching a strike out and setting the Chargers up for a comeback opportunity. Roeger would start the bottom of the ninth singling to left field before first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) would rip a ground ball to short stop causing an error and a runner to move into scoring position. The Pilgrims would manage to tally two outs before sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) stepped into the box. Schmitt swung for the fences and ripped home a 2-run homerun to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
  • In the 10th the Pilgrims would find their gas again, scoring off of a long ball from Gendron. The Chargers would get a runner into scoring position but would fly out to end the game.
