NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team made a statement on Tuesday afternoon defeating Johnson & Wales by a 9-7 final. With the win the Chargers move to 5-3 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and currently sit in the 4th seed.
Rapid Recap
- The Wildcats started off hot getting three runs in the first inning on just a single hit. Colby-Sawyer chipped away with a single run on a first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) basehit to score sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.). Johnson & Wales added three more runs in the top half of the second inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead over the home team. Colby-Sawyer stayed steady as sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) hit an RBI single to plate sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) who stole second after singling.
- In the bottom of the third inning the Chargers came all the way back getting four runs on three hits. It started with first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) knocking a double to score Dennis. Followed by a RBI ground out by sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) and a balk to plate Staffier. The Chargers finally evened the score as Watson came through in the clutch with a RBI single to score sophomore Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine).
- In the bottom of the fourth the Chargers stormed in front as Dennis doubled home graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) and Carignan. In the sixth the Chargers tacked on the ninth run of the day as Staffier singled to score O'Brien. Sophomore Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) kept the Chargers in front only allowing one run before turning it over to closer junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) who closed things out without allowing a run.
On the Mound:
- First year Brady Young (Stratham, N.H.) started off the game allowing six runs (two earned) on one hit while striking out two. Donahue took over picking up the win throwing 5.1 innings of work with six strikeouts and only one run. Mullen picked up his fourth save with three strikeouts in five outs.
At the Plate:
- Dennis led the batters going 2-for-3 with three RBI, three stolen bags, a run scored and a double. Staffier went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Watson added a 2-for-5 day with two clutch RBI.
