Carpenter's Gem and Roeger's Bat Lead Chargers Past New England College 8-2

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team picked up their first win in New London on Monday as the Chargers defeated New England College by a 8-2 final.

  • The Pilgrims picked up the first run of the game in the first inning as Tyler Gendron hit a sacrifice fly to score Brady Philibotte who doubled to lead off the game. The Chargers quickly took the lead back on their home soil getting three runs in the bottom half of the first. It started with a two RBI double by graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) who scored sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) and sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.). First year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) added the third run of the inning with a base hit to center to score O'Brien. 
  • In the top half of the fifth inning the Pilgrims finally got back on the board with an RBI single to cut the Charger lead to 3-2. Colby-Sawyer answered again with an O'Brien double to score Carignan followed by another Roeger ribby single pushed the lead back to 5-2. Sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) came in the clutch with a RBI knock to score Roeger as the lead grew to four runs after five innings. 
  • The final run came in the bottom of the 8th as the Chargers tacked on more insurance as Roeger doubled down the left field line to score Watson and sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) as the Chargers closed out the 8-2 win. 
On the Mound:
  • Sophomore Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) dazzled on the mound again going seven innings of work allowing just a pair of runs with four strikeouts to move to 3-2 on the year. Junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) closed things out with two shut down innings with three more punch outs.
At the Plate:
  • Roeger led the offense with a 3-for-5 day at the dish with four RBI, a run scored, a double and two stolen bases. O'Brien went 2-for-4 with three ribbys, two doubles and two runs scored. 
Post Game Press:
"This win gets us going", said sophomore Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.). "It was a good team win, we did everything as one. I have to thank my fielders today and especially Sean Roeger, who had big days. We will come back here tomorrow firing and looking for another win."
