Chargers Bullpen Can't Hold Lead in Loss Against Elms

NEW LONDON, N.H. – It was opening day in New London as the Chargers played their first home game of 2024 falling to Elms College by a 11-5 final on Sunday.

  • The Blazers picked up an early lead with a RBI single to score the first run in the top half of the second inning. The lead grew to two runs in the 3rd inning as Trevor Nohilly homered. The Chargers jumped in front in the bottom half of the frame scoring three runs.It started as sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) tripled home sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.). Graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) added a sacrifice fly to score Carignan to tie the game. Colby-Sawyer took the lead as sophomore Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) doubled home first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) as the home team had their first lead. 
  • Colby-Sawyer held the lead going into the sixth inning where the Blazers blew the game open with six runs on six hits to take a 8-3 lead. Junior Ben Mensch (Tampa, Fla.) cut into the lead with a two RBI pinch hit single scoring Staffier and first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.). The lead grew to 10-5 on a two run blast by Josh Pasini before the Blazers added the final run in the 9th to grab the 11-5 win.
On the Mound:
  • First year Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) started for the Chargers going five innings of work allowing two runs on five hits with four punch outs. Sophomore Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) picked up the loss out of the bullpen allowing four runs while getting two outs. Junior Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) got one out while allowing two runs. Dennis was next getting four outs while allowing two runs with two strikeouts. First year Brady Young (Stratham, N.H.) got the remaining two outs of the eighth while first year Vinny Digiacomo (Marstons Mills, Mass.) allowed a run in an inning with a strikeout. 
At the Plate:
  • Carignan led the offense going 2-for-4, with a triple, run scored, RBI and a walk. Staffier went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI. Mensch added a 1-for-1 performance with a pair of ribbys. 
Up Next:
The Chargers will take on New England College tomorrow in New London with a start time of 2:30 PM.
