Chargers Prevail in Senior Day Thriller

NEW LONDON, NH – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up its sixth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win for the season on Saturday beating Regis by a score of 11-10.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers started out hot with junior captain Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) finding the back of the net in less than 60 seconds. The Chargers didn't let off the gas as junior midfielder Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) pocketed back-to-back goals. First year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H) finished out the quarter with a crafty goal putting the Chargers up 4-2 headed into the second.
  • The Chargers offense picked up where it left off as Finlayson put up two more goals on the board. Regis and Colby-Sawyer battled constantly as the Chargers defense provided relentless pressure on the Pride. Graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) led the defensive effort by putting up three caused turnovers in the second quarter alone. Regis answered back with a couple goals of their own leaving the score 7-4 headed into the next half.
  • The Chargers couldn't find the offensive rhythm to start the third as the Pride's defense proved to be resilient. This led to a comeback for the Pride through the duration of the quarter closing the gap to only one goal. The Chargers bounced back at the end of the quarter with Hanson weaving traffic to find the back of the net extending the lead 8-6 headed into the last quarter.
  • With new offensive momentum to start the quarter the Chargers found their groove again. Senior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) was the mastermind behind the offensive attack by finding back-to-back teammates to extend the Chargers lead to three goals. Junior defenseman Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) kept the Chargers defense firing on all cylinders by posting four caused turnovers in the period. The Pride came back by putting up three goals to close the gap 11-10, but it wasn't enough to put away the Chargers on senior day.
Post-Game Press:
"Today we played for our seniors!" Said Junior Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.), "We came out ready to perform and to play together as a team. Our defense showed up today, working together and coming up with the ball. Simone had a huge impact in the net today coming up with big saves! I'm glad we could work together and come out with the dub on this special day!"

Inside The Numbers:
  • Himes put up an excellent performance by tallying seven caused turnovers, nine ground balls, and notched her 100th career caused turnover. Hanson and Finlayson put up an offensive master class both ending the day with hat-tricks. Ponzini notched two more goals on the year. While Smith, Marquis, and Kuhlthau also found the back of the net for the Chargers.
  • Senior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) picked up the win today with a dominant performance in the net. The senior posted 10 saves on the day and led the Chargers to a senior day victory.
