NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team broke their winning streak on Friday falling to the Monk of Saint Joseph's College of Maine by a 13-6 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Monks came out of the gate firing on all cylinders with Carson Battaglia and Bridget Collins notching back to back goals and starting a 5-0 run for the visitors. A turnover in the midfield caused by graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) would lead to a fast paced goal from first year Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine). The Monks would respond quickly ending the quater up 7-1 off of goals from Celia Melanson and Mackenzie Siebert.
- The second quarter began competitively with the teams exchanging caused turnovers before Smith would scoop up the ground ball and fed junior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.). Battaglia would match extending the lead back to seven but a free position goal from senior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) would attempt to close the gap. Another Hanson goal with 2-minutes left to go, her 200th career point, would bring the half to an end with the Monks leading 10-4.
- The beginning of the third would start slowly before at the 9-minute mark Siebert would find a solo goal putting the Monks back up seven. A long ball by junior keeper AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) up the turf to sophomore Cecelia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) who would feed the hot hand of Hanson completing her hat trick. Fellow classmate Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) would end the quarter with a free position score bringing the battle to 12-6 in favor of the Monks.
- The fourth quarter would remain uneventful score wise but the teams would battle in the midfield and taking defensive stands. Junior Hannah Himes (Essex, Vt.) would remain a force to be reckoned with locking down the Monks scoring threats and causing turnovers on their drives. A handful of cards would plague the Chargers in the later half of the quarter leading to the final score from the Monks by Battaglia bringing the final score to 13-6.
Inside The Numbers:
- Hanson led the offensive push registering three goals, one assist while picking up two ground balls and winning four draw controls. Kuhlthau, Romo, and Smith would each score one goal with Kuhlthau forcing three turnovers, Junior Emma Webster (Campton, N.H.) would register a strong defensive day causing three turnovers and scooping up three ground balls.
- Paton picked up the loss but registered nine saves while allowing 13 goals.
