MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball dropped its first game of the 2024 season on Saturday falling to Manhattanville College by a 17-3 final in seven innings. The teams were supposed to play a doubleheader that was changed to a single game due to inclement weather.
Rapid Recap:
- The Valiants took an early lead in the first scoring off a throwing error and a sacrifice fly to earn a 2-0 advantage. In the second Manhattanville added three more runs on a sac-fly and two RBI singles up the middle to gain the early 5-0 lead. The Valiants tacked on two more in the top half of the third to trail 7-0 after the top half of the third.
- The Chargers bats battled back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on two hits. Sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) kicked off the inning with a walk, before coming around on a fielder's choice by sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.). Sophomore Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) and graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) each added RBI singles to cut the deficit to just four runs. The Valients responded in a big way getting three more runs across the plate in the fourth to push the lead right back to 10-3.
- Manhattanville would plated seven more runs in the contest, while the Chargers bats only mustered four hits in the loss.
- The Chargers as a team committed seven errors on the day, while the pitching staff only allowed six earned runs with 11 unearned in the defeat.
On the Mound:
- Senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) struggled in his second start on the year going three and two-thirds innings allowing 11 runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Sophomore Anthony De Tone (Weare, N.H.) was next making his collegiate debut. De Tone tossed four outs, while allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. First year Hayden Goerlich (Amherst, N.H.) also got into his first collegiate game throwing a pair of innings allowing two runs (one earned).
At the Plate:
- Watson led the offense with a 1-for-3 day including an RBI and a run scored. MacLennan and O'Brien each got the other RBI. First year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) added a 1-for-2 day.
Up Next:
The Chargers will continue play in the Ripken Experience with a twin-bill tomorrow against Mount Aloysius College with 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM start times.
