MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped both games in its doubleheader on Sunday falling to Mount Aloysius College by a 16-7 score in game one and a 3-1 final in game two.
Rapid Recap Game 1 (16-7):
- First year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) battled for the Chargers in the first inning getting out of a bases loaded, 0 out jam getting a pair of strikeouts and a pop out to short. In the second inning the Mounties stormed ahead with a four spot on five hits and an error. Brandon Cook knocked a two-run homer in the inning along with an RBI double and a RBI single coming from Ryan Bushey and Zack Peck.
- An error by the first baseman plagued the Chargers in the third getting the fifth run across the plate and another single by Bushey pushed the lead to 6-0 headed into the bottom of the third. The Chargers bats woke up in the bottom half getting four runs to cut the deficit to two runs. Sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) earned the first riby for the Chargers walking with the bases loaded. Graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) followed it up with a two RBI single through the right side. First year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) added the final RBI of the inning with a sacrifice fly plating Johnson.
- Joshua Brown homered for the Mounties in the top half of the fourth to plate two of the fours runs scored by the visitors in the inning as the lead pushed back up to 10-4. Sophomore Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI ground out to plate sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.). In the fifth inning Brown did it again for Mount Aloysius with his second homer to get the 11th run across the plate. Colby-Sawyer answered yet again as Staffier plated O'Brien on a RBI ground out to keep the score at 11-6.
- In the top of the sixth more damage was done as the Mounties plated five runs on two hits to take a huge 16-6 advantage. In the final inning the Chargers mustered up one final run as junior Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) got an infield single to plate sophomore Mike Krouse (Peabody, Mass.).
On the Mound:
- Dennis picked up the loss tossing three innings of work allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits, while adding four strikeouts. Junior Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) was next hurling an inning allowing four runs. Junior Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) got four outs next allowing five runs (four earned) with three punch outs. First year Brady Young (Stratham, N.H.) got a pair of outs for the Chargers with a strikeout. Sophomore Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) closed things out going a shut out inning with two strikeouts.
At the Plate:
- O'Brien led the offense going 2-for-2 with two ribys, a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Wheeler went 1-for-1 with the RBI base hit, while Schmitt added a 1-for-3 game with a run scored and a stolen bag.
Rapid Recap Game 2 (3-1):
- The Mounties scored all three runs in the first inning as Cook scored on an error. Tyler Quade added a highlight play stealing home, while John Griffith added an RBI single to give the home team in game two a 3-0 lead.
- In the second inning Colby-Sawyer got a run back as Schmitt singled through the left side scoring first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) to cut the lead to 3-1.
- The Chargers and Mounties stayed dead locked at 3-1 the rest of the way with the best Colby-Sawyer chance coming in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and zero outs, but Joey DeRubeis kept the score at 3-1 getting three-straight strikeouts.
On the Mound:
- Sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) got the loss in game two throwing four innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks. Watson also set down four batters. Junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) was impressive out of the bullpen with two innings of shut out work with four punch outs.
At the Plate:
- Johnson led the offense in the second game going 1-for-3 with a triple and a stolen base. Schmitt added the lone RBI going 1-for-3.
Up Next:
The Chargers will have an off day Monday before having two more games in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday.
