MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team picked up their first win down in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday defeating FDU - Florham by a 7-5 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Devils got on the board first with a four spot in the bottom of the second behind five hits and three RBI singles. Sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) got the Chargers into the score column in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to bring in sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.).
- Both teams remained scoreless until the top half of the fifth inning where the Chargers bats erupted for five runs. Sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) doubled in sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.). Carignan followed it up with a two RBI double scoring Montalvo and Schmitt to even the score. Graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) put the visitors on top with a two-run blast with two outs to give Colby-Sawyer a 6-4 lead.
- The Chargers extended the lead in the top half of the seventh inning with a RBI single by sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) to score sophomore Mike Krouse (Peabody, Mass.) to push the lead to 7-4. The Devils added a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo shot by Dylan Hode, but junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) shut down any hope of a comeback getting out of a bases loaded jam.
On the Mound:
- First year Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) picked up the win for the Chargers in his first collegiate start tossing five innings. Burchard ended the day allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) was next allowing a single run while punching out two in an inning plus of work. Mullen closed things out with three shut down innings with five strikeouts and 33 pitches for his first collegiate save.
At the Plate:
- Carignan led the offense with a 2-for-3 day with three RBI, a double and a run scored. O'Brien got the two-run homer in the win. First year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) and senior Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) each added 2-for-3 performances from the plate.
