Carpenter's Gem Not Enough as Chargers Fall to Mount Aloysius College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped its third game to Mount Aloysius College this week falling to the Mounties by a 16-3 final. Sophomore Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) was brilliant tossing six innings with a career-best eight strikeouts, while only allowing three runs (one earned). 
 
Rapid Recap:
  • The teams were scoreless heading into the bottom half of the third, where the Mounties finally took the lead on an RBI single up the middle. The Chargers tried to answer in the top half of the fourth with runners on second and third, but the Colby-Sawyer could not get a runner across. 
  • Mount Aloysius got the benefit of two errors scoring two more runs on huge double by Griffin Tunison to extend the lead to 3-0. The Chargers bats remained silent with the Mounties getting a fourth run in the bottom of the sixth on a Tunison single up the middle. Colby-Sawyer finally got on the board in the seventh as sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) singled into right field scoring sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) and sophomore Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) to cut the lead in half. 
  • The Mounties would blow the game open in the bottom of the seventh with seven runs on four hits and three errors to gain a 11-2 advantage. Montalvo got another run back with an RBI single up the middle to score first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.), but the Mounties remained in control scoring five more runs in the eighth to win by the 16-3 final. 
On the Mound:
  • Carpenter threw the six innings of work allowing just six hits with eight strikeouts and zero walks. Junior Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) was next throwing two-thirds of an inning allowing seven runs (six earned) with a strikeout. First year Trevor Robichaud (Leominster, Mass.) finished the remaining four outs allowing five runs with three punch outs. 
At the Plate:
  • Watson tallied both RBIs for the Chargers in a 2-for-4 day with a stolen base, while Montalvo added a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and a RBI. Sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) registered a 3-for-4 day and a stolen base. 
Up Next:
The Chargers will play a doubleheader against Fredonia State University on Thursday with a 9:00 AM first pitch.
