Chargers Erase Early Deficit in 10-6 Comeback Win Over Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up their third-straight victory on Wednesday defeating Fitchburg State University by a 10-6 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers struggled early on not able to find the net in the first 15 minutes with six shots in the first frame. The Falcons would score three goals in the first quarter taking the advantage into the second quarter. 
  • The Falcon lead grew to four at the 14:49 mark as Fitchburg State continued to soar. After a Charger timeout, Colby-Sawyer finally woke up as sophomore Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) scored with 5:20 to play in the second. Senior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) added a second goal with a free position strike to cut the Falcon lead in half. Bronson ended the first half run with the third goal assisted by graduate student Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) to get the score to 4-3 headed into the second half. 
  • Junior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) kicked off the second half quickly with a goal by first year Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine) to even the score with 12:07 remaining in the third. Junior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) continued the Charger surge with her 10th goal of the year to put the visitors on top. Graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) added another goal for the Chargers from Hanson to push the consecutive goal streak to six as Colby-Sawyer held a 6-4 lead. Fitchburg State finally stopped the run with 9:35 remaining in the quarter. Junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) kept the Chargers in front with two key saves which led to another Hanson goal on an assist by Kuhlthau as Colby-Sawyer led headed into the final 15 minutes. 
  • Hanson extended the lead further with a goal from first year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) with 12:11 left. After another save from Paton, Hanson added another goal by Marquis to push the lead to 9-5 with 7:44 left. The Falcons found the back of the net with 5:43 to play, but Fitchburg State could not get past the Chargers again. Kuhlthau padded the stats at the end with a final second goal to get us to 10-6. 
Post Game Press:
"We had a slow start in the first quarter, but our defense led by junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) helped us to overcome adversity", said junior Heather Hanson. "We focused on the little things that carried into the big things which allowed us to come out with the win in the end."

Inside The Numbers: 
  • Hanson led the offense with five points on four goals and an assist to go with six ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls. Kuhlthau registered two goals, one assist, four grounders and four draws. Bronson tallied two goals, while Marquis added a goal and an assist in the win. 
  • Defensively junior Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) led the way with three caused turnovers and four grounders. Sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) added two causes and three ground balls. 
  • Paton stopped seven shots in the non-conference win. 
  • Jessica St. George and Nicole Orlowski each scored two goals each to lead Fitchburg State in the loss.

The Chargers will return to action on Saturday when they host Salem State University in New London at 1:00 PM.
