O'Brien Leads Chargers to a Split Against Gordon College

Written By: Julianna DeGray

WENHAM, Mass. — The Chargers split their meeting with Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon losing the first game before winning the second. Graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) led the offense in the second game going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a homerun to push the Chargers to victory.

Rapid Recap Game One (Loss 5-0):
  • The Chargers were unable to capitalize in the top half of the first on a walk and stolen base by sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) stranding him on second base. The Scots opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first inning off two singles and a hit-by pitch. A double by Joey Kazlauskas would lead to a 3-0 lead for the home team. Chargers first year pitcher Colin Burchard (Uptown, Mass.) got the Chargers out of the first inning by getting two strikeouts.
  • Gordon would add two more runs in the bottom half of the second inning thanks to a lead-off triple, single and double, bringing the lead to 5-0 at the end of two innings.
  • The two teams were then in a standstill for the rest of the game. The no-hitter would end for the Chargers on a hit by first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.), who singled in the top of final inning.
On the Mound:
  • Burchard picked up the loss tossing four innings of work, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, while adding four punch outs. Sophomore Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) was the first call to the bullpen allowing one hit in an inning. Junior Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) tossed the next inning, allowing one hit to finish the sixth.
At the Plate:
  • Staffier led the way for the Chargers going 1-for-3, with the sole hit for the Chargers. Carignan and first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) both tallied two walks in the seven-inning game.
Rapid Recap Game Two (Win 11-6):
  • The two teams were in a standstill for the first two innings before sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) doubled home sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) in the third to put the Chargers ahead 1-0. The Scots tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a solo-homer from Kazlauskas. Gordon continued their scoring spree in the fifth inning, plating five runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly to take a 6-1 lead.
  • O'Brien opened the scoring in the sixth with a home run to right field, scoring Carignan as well. That opened the floodgates for the Chargers as their bats came to life. Dennis followed with a double to right center. First year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) got hit by pitch and sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) walked to load the bases. Montalvo came through next doubling to right center to get two runners. Another Charger double by sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) pushed another Charger run across, and Schmitt hit a sacrifice fly for the lead. Sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass,) did a squeeze bunt to plate the eighth run of the inning. Carignan battled to another walk which lead to O'Brien's second at bat of the inning, hitting a double to right center to tally his third RBI of the inning. Dennis would follow up with a single through the left side to score O'Brien.
  • The Chargers added one more run of insurance in the top of the seventh when Schmitt singled to left center scoring junior pitcher Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) who singled in his only collegiate at bat of his career.
On the Mound:
  • Dennis started the game for the Chargers, pitching four innings of work while giving up one run on two hits. Senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) came in after Dennis, pitching one inning while letting up five runs on five hits, along with two walks and a strikeout. Mullen got the win for the Chargers, pitching two innings, giving up one hit and striking out three for his first win of the year.
At the Plate:
  • O'Brien lead the Chargers offense going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double with three RBI and two runs scored. Montalvo went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and two more RBI. Schmitt added a 2-for-2 day with a double and three RBI.
Post Game Press:
"After the first game it was great for us to turn things around," said junior Jack Mullen(Norfolk, Mass.). "We put together a great team win. Glad to see the bats get hot in the second game and we had the pitching to back it up."
