Chargers Defense Shuts Down New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Chargers defense held true in a 12-7 win over GNAC opponent New England College.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers scored first, a goal from a fantastic strike from sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) assisted from Graduate Student Sydney Stevens. Mackenzie McDonald opened the scoring for the Pilgrims. After the first five minutes of play, the lead grew to 3-1 when Graduate Student Hannah Marquis (Hopkinton, N.H.) scored a tough goal, assisted by Stevens, and Junior Soph Kuhltha (Cheshire, Conn.) followed from a free position opportunity.
  • Second-quarter play began with a man-up advantage goal by Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine), assisted by Junior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.). Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) followed with a man-advantage goal as the lead quickly grew to 5-1. Junior Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.), junior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) and junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) each shined defensively to close the half for the Chargers.
  • The third quarter started with another Ponzini snipe off of a dime from Stevens. The Pilgrims would respond with two goals of their own, from Gilchrist and McDonald, to keep the game within an arms reach. 
  • First year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) extended the lead with back-to-back goals in the fourth. Finlayson also scored the 11th and 12th goals to seal the victory before the Pilgrims ended the scoring with a goal as time expired.
Post Game Press:
"Tonight was a really high intensity throughout the game," said first year Rose Finlayson. "We were able to keep our heads up and our defense was simply on fire."

Inside The Numbers:
  • Finlayson led the scoring with four goals and four points, scoring her 16th goal of the season. Kuhlthau finished with three goals, collecting six points, with five ground balls and one cause turnover.
  • Stevens led the passing and finished the game with three assist leading all players.
  • Paton picked up the win with seven saves allowing seven goals,
Up Next: The Chargers will be back in action Saturday on the road against Anna Maria with a 12:00 PM start.
