Chargers Bounce Back with 16-2 Victory Over Simmons

NEW LONDON, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season with a dominant 16-2 win over Simmons.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers raced to an early two goal lead as sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) firing a free position shot past the Sharks keeper before graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) scored a power-play goal from junior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.). The lead grew to 4-0 after the first five minutes of play as first year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) tallied back-to-back strikes. Maddie Desimio-Maloney scored to start the scoring for the Sharks, but Hanson stopped the momentum quickly with a steal and score from the goalkeeper. Hanson and junior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) added closing goals to the quarter as the lead was 7-1 after the first 15 minutes.
  • Ponzini opened the second quarter with a man-up advantage goal assisted by graduate student Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.). Kuhlthau was next netting goal number 100 from Stevens before Hanson netted the hat-trick as the lead quickly grew to 10-1. Junior Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) and junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) each shined defensively to close the half as Himes caused two turnovers and Paton stopped two shots on target as the lead was 10-1 headed into the second half.
  • First year Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine) moved the lead to double-digits with a goal by Ponzini. Ponzini added the 12th goal on a free position strike, while Hanson added the 13th as we headed into the fourth quarter with a 13-1 lead.
  • Finlayson and Hanson each scored early to extend the lead even further. Ponzini added the final goal in the game for the Chargers before the Sharks ended the scoring with a goal as time expired.
