Chargers Bats Explode Behind Carpenter's Gem in 13-1 Win Over La Roche University

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team concluded its spring break trip on Saturday with a 13-1 thrashing of La Roche University at the Polo Grounds of the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. The trip concludes with a 4-6 record by the Chargers who head back to the northeast with a 6-6 overall record. Sophomore Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) tossed another gem in the win picking up his second victory in South Carolina. 
 
Rapid Recap
  • The Chargers jumped ahead early as graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) singled home first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.). Sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) added to the damage in the first with a triple to plate O'Brien and sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.). First year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) plated the fourth grounding out to score Carignan as the lead was four after one. 
  • Colby-Sawyer brought home three more runs in the third inning as Johnson doubled down the left field line to score O'Brien. Johnson would later steal home to come around and Dennis plated another with a RBI ground out. Carpenter continued to dazzle still not allowing a run through four. 
  • The Chargers ballooned the lead to 11 runs after the fourth with a Carignan RBI single to score sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.). Dennis would get into the hit column to plate Roeger and Johnson, while sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) singled to left to score Carignan. In the fifth the bats stayed hot with two more runs as O'Brien plated Watson and Johnson singled to score Roeger as the Charger lead hit 13-0. Carpenter would allow a single run in the 5th, but the Chargers held on for the dominant win. 
On the Mound:
  • Carpenter picked up his second win of the year with five innings allowing one run on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. First year Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) closed things out with two shutout innings and a pair of strikeouts. 
At the Plate:
  • Johnson led the offensive attack going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a pair of RBI, two walks, a stolen base and a double. Carignan tallied a 2-for-3 day with a triple, three RBI, three runs scored and a stolen bag. Watson pushed his hitting-streak to 11 games going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. O'Brien went 2-for-4 with a double, two ribys, and two runs scored. Roeger added a 1-for-2 day with three runs scored. 
Post Game Press:
"It felt great to end the trip with a win", said sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.). "It was an up and down start to the trip, but we really hit our stride towards the end. Can't wait to keep this rolling into conference play."

"It was a great way to finish our trip", said sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.). "We faced a couple of bad losses early on, but we were able to battle back and finish with a big win. Bats were hot and we're looking forward to building off this in GNAC play."

The Chargers will take the field on March 19th against Emerson College at the New England Baseball Complex with a 3:30 PM start.
