Watson's Two-Way Performance Leads Chargers to Split Versus St. Joesph's University - Long Island

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) was masterful for the Chargers on Friday as Colby-Sawyer split a twin bill against St. Joseph's University - Long Island in the final doubleheader of the week. Watson ended the first game with the win on the mound tossing five and two-thirds innings while also going 4-for-4 at the plate in the 11-3 win. 
 
Rapid Recap Game One (Win 11-3):
  • Colby-Sawyer jumped ahead early on a sacrifice fly by graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) who plated sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) who led off the inning with a double. The lead added two more runs in the bottom of the second as sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) tattooed a homer over the left field wall. The lead hit four after the top half of the third as first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) singled to center to score Watson.
  • On the mound Watson continued to dazzle setting down 14-straight Golden Eagles at one point. The lead continued to grow in the bottom of the fifth as O'Brien singled home Watson. First year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) added a sixth run with an RBI single. In the top of the sixth the Golden Eagles finally got on the score sheet with a pair of runs on one hit, but junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) got out of the jam forcing a pop out. 
  • The Chargers fought back in the bottom half of the inning plating five more runs on five hits. It started with an RBI single by Schmitt, followed by a RBI base hit up the middle by Watson. O'Brien continued the parade with a knock to plate Carignan. Staffier picked up the fifth run of the inning with another RBI single. Mullen closed down the seventh after allowing a run to pick up the Charger win. 
On the Mound:
  • Watson ended the game tossing five and two-thirds innings allowing two runs on two hits and three walks with four punch outs. Mullen picked up the save with two strikeouts in the four outs. 
At the Plate:
  • Watson led the way going 4-for-4 with a doubles, three runs scored and a RBI. O'Brien tallied a 2-for-3 day with three RBI, and two runs scored. Schmitt added his first home run of the season with three RBI and two runs scored. 
Rapid Recap Game Two (Loss 9-8):
  • Sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) provided some early run support for the Chargers getting two RBI scoring Watson and O'Brien. In the top of the second the Chargers added a third run as senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) hit a bomb to left field for his first collegiate homer. Sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) continued the hot hitting in the third with a RBI double to score Johnson as the lead increased to 4-0 after the top of the third.
  • The Golden Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the third with five runs on four hits and an error. The lead for the home team increased in the fourth on another RBI single. Colby-Sawyer stormed ahead in the top of the fifth with four runs on three hits. It started with Cruz singling up the middle scoring O'Brien. Sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) tied the game up with another single to plate Cruz. The Chargers took the lead as senior Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) reached on an error by the leftfielder to score two more runs. The game was tied back up the bottom half of the sixth after a balk and a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Golden Eagles ended up walking off for the win on a single and error which allowed them to score in the bottom of the seventh.
On the Mound:
  • Dennis got the start with four innings with six runs allowed (four earned) on eight hits with one strikeout. Junior Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) was next allowing two runs on three hits while getting four outs. Junior Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) got the next two outs, while junior Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) picked up the loss recording an out. 
At the Plate:
  • Cruz went 2-for-3 to lead the offense with a double, stolen base, two RBI and two caught stealing defensively. O'Brien added a 2-for-4 game two with two runs and a double. Johnson added a 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. 
Up Next:
The Chargers will conclude its trip in Myrtle Beach with a 9:00 AM start against La Roche on Saturday.
