STANDISH, Maine – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball dropped its second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game of the year on Saturday losing to Saint Joseph's (Maine) by a 77-71 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers and Monks kept even after the first five minutes with a score of 5-5, but the visitors took the lead on a pair of baskets by junior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.). The Monks evened the score again, but a 6-0 run started by a junior Jaisan Parker (Durham, N.C.) to keep Colby-Sawyer in front by a 17-11 margin. Another 7-2 run later by the Chargers finished off by a triple by sophomore Sadiq Abdullahi (Homestead, Fla.) to give CSC a 27-20 lead. Another jumper by junior Mike Joanou (Burbank, Calif.) pushed the lead to eight points, but the Monks closed the half on a 8-0 run to tie the game at 29-29 into the break.
- The teams traded baskets to kick off the second quarter, but a 9-0 run by the home team gave the Monks a 41-33 lead with 16:09 to play. Cullum finished a layup to cut the lead down to six, but a three by John Paul Frazier pushed the Monks lead to nine. Abdullahi netted a three-pointer followed by another by Parker to keep the deficit at 47-41, but with 9:21 to play Saint Joseph's (Maine) pushed the lead to 13 points on back-to-back threes by Julian Llopiz. Junior Bullen Taban (Phoenix, Ariz.) netted a pair of free throws before Abdullahi finished another tough basket in the paint to get the game back down to 59-50 with 8:18 to play. The lead for the Monks hovered around 10 points for the next seven minutes. The Chargers did not go away without a fight with a 10-0 run in the last two minutes to take the lead down to four points, but Saint Joseph's (Maine) closed out the game with free throws to hold on to the 77-71 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Abdullahi registered a new career-high in the loss scoring 17 points (7-12 FG, 3-6 3PT) to go with six rebounds. Cullum also tabbed a new best in scoring with 19 points (8-16 FG, 0-2 3PT, 3-4 FT), five assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Joanou notched 11 points (5-12 FG, 1-2 3PT) and a block, while Taban added nine points (3-5 FG, 3-4 FT), 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
- Llopiz led the Monks with 15 points (3-8 FG, 3-7 3PT, 6-7 FT) and five rebounds. Ashtyn Abbott added 13 points (5-11 FG, 1-5 3PT, 2-3 FT) and eight boards.
- The Monks enjoyed a favorable whistle at home getting to the free throw line 31 times for 22 points, while the Chargers only mustered 12 attempts for eight points.
