Chargers Can't Push Past New England College

HENNIKER, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball dropped its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Thursday to New England College by a 61-53 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • Sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) opened the scoring with a bucket from graduate student Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.), but the Pilgrims countered with nine-straight points to take a seven point lead. Raynowska stopped the run with a trifecta, but NEC answered with a three of their own to hold the lead. The teams traded baskets, with triples by junior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) and first year Bree Lawrence (Swanzey, N.H.) cutting the deficit to 17-13, but the Pilgrims battled back taking a 24-17 lead into the second quarter.
  • Holt laced her second three of the game as the Chargers came out with a 8-3 run to trim the lead to just a single point. The Pilgrims battled back to hold a 34-28 lead with just over four minutes to play in the first half. Each team would just score two more points the rest of the way as New England College held a six point lead.
  • Grillone knocked down a three to kick off the third quarter to trim the lead to three. The Pilgrims answered with a three of their own, but the teams would not score again until the 2:32 mark of the third quarter where first year Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) netted a three of her own. Holt finished another jumper to give CSC the lead, but a free throw evened the score at 40-40 with 10 minutes to play.
  • Junior Gabby Lucertini (Branford. Conn.) scored four consecutive points for the visitors to keep the game even at 44-44, but the Pilgrims took control with a 7-2 run to earn the lead. The Chargers netted five shots from the charity stripe to keep the Chargers within four points with 1:07 to play, but NEC netted their own free throws to pull away with the 61-53 win.
