NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team came up short Saturday against Connecticut College (25-13, 25-8, 25-10) and Coast Guard (25-11, 25-15, 25-18).
Rapid Recap (Connecticut College):
- Connecticut College began the first set with an early 8-2 lead behind a pair of service aces (Natasha Shrivastava) and kills from Riley Lord. The Chargers would break up the run with a kill from first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.). The Camels would continue their dominance in the set with three services aces to complete their second run to bring the score to 21-10. Skourtis would help attempt a late run for the Chargers with a service ace, but a kill from Lord would seal the Camels victory.
- The second set would begin with a pair of kills from the Camels to bring them to an early 4-1 lead. The Chargers would respond with a run of their own with a kill from Skourtis, a block from Olivia Deshane (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Ari Cuevas (Somersworth, N.H.) and a service ace from Maria Avila (Goffstown, N.H.) to bring the score 5-4 in favor of the visitors. The Camels would complete a seven point run before Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.) would notch her first kill of the match. The Camels would end the set with a 14-1-point run.
- The Camels would continue their streak into the third set completing a 16-4 opening run. Skourtis would respond for the Chargers with a service ace, followed with a pair of Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.) kills. The Camels would end the match with a kill from Evie Mullaney Lockwood.
Rapid Recap (Coast Guard):
- The Chargers would open their first set against Coast Guard with a quick 5-2 run ignited by a Skourtis kill. Coast Guard would respond with a kill from Shannon Shaw and Sophia Galdamez. Coast Guard would recover to go on a large run to bring the score to 21-10 and finish the set with a kill from Elizabeth Atkinson.
- Â The second set would begin with the teams exchanging points off of errors and a kill from Skourtis. The Bears would continue a run bringing the score to 8-4 before an Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) and a kill from Williams. The Chargers would continue to rally to bring the score to 11-14 with a kill and service ace from Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.). The teams would continue to exchange points until a final eight point run from the Bears would seal the set.\
- The third set would be the most competitive of the evening with runs from both teams, beginning with a kill from Skourtis. The Chargers would go on a run to go up 8-3 with a kill from Patnode, an ace from Bacon and a kill from Majenski. The Bears would respond with a run of their own to bring the score to 14-8 in favor of the Bears. A kill from Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) would end the run. The Chargers would make their final push behind an Avila ace and a group of errors from the Bears, before a pair of kills would end the set in favor of the Bears.
Inside the Numbers:
- Williams would lead the offense in the first match with three of the team's 11 kills.
- Skourtis would lead the offense in the second match with three kills, and two digs.
- Defensively Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) would register 14 digs on the afternoon.
- Bacon filled the stat sheet with six digs, ten assists and three aces for the squad.
