MILTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team were bested on Wednesday evening falling to Curry College by a 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20) final.
Rapid Recap:
- Junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) started off the match with a service ace as the Chargers jumped ahead 5-2. Two kills by junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) and another kill by junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) kept the visitors in front 13-10. The Colonels battled back to even the score at 13, but two aces from senior Maria Avila (Goffstown, N.H.) and a kill by Mollberg kept the Chargers ahead. Curry countered to even the score again, but a 6-1 run sparked by kills first year Ari Cuevas (Somersworth, N.H.) and first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.). A kill by Majenski and an ace by Skourtis helped the Chargers hold on by a 25-19 final.
- The Chargers held an early 8-7 advantage and after another kill by Majenski and ace by Fontes the Chargers held a slight 10-9 lead. The Colonels stormed ahead on a 6-2 run to hold a 15-12 lead. After one attacking error Curry continued their success with four more points to grow the lead to six points. Majenski picked up three more kills to spark a 9-3 run to take back the lead at 23-22, but the Colonels closed things out with three-straight points to take the second set.
- The teams traded points and held a 3-3 tie in the early going before a 9-2 run by the home team jumped the lead to 12-5. A kill by Mollberg stopped the run by Curry College and kick started a 6-1 run by the Chargers. The Colonels continued to lead as the teams keep battling back and forth, but the lead would never get below two points as the Chargers fell 25-21.
- Curry stormed ahead in the fourth set taking a 5-3 lead, but kills by Mollberg and Cuevas kept the game even. The Colonels continued to lead 11-9 before a 3-0 counter by the Chargers finished off by a kill by senior Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.) to give the visitors a 12-11 lead. Curry College eventually took the lead back on a 6-1 run to hold a 19-15 advantage before holding on for the match win.
Inside The Numbers:
- Mollberg led the team in kills with a career-high 13 on a .216 kill percentage. Majenski followed with 10 of her own on a .143 kill percentage.
- Avila led the serving effort with a career-high five aces.
- Patnode led the passing with 36 assists to go with nine digs and a kill.
- Defensively Fontes continued to be rock solid with 25 followed by Mollberg and Avila with 13 each.
