Chargers Swept in Day 2 of Roger WIlliams Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team faltered during today's matches, featuring Clark University and Wellesley College.

Rapid Recap (Clark University) L (14-25, 16-25, 17-25): 
  • The Cougars jumped ahead to an early 5-1 advantage before trading points back and forth with the Chargers. A string of kills put together by Sheyenne Willams, Sofia Scherrer del Liano, and two service aces from Yumeng Liu quickly ended the exchange. A pair of kills from first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, NH) and junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) would get the Chargers back on the board. The Cougars would end the set with five consecutive points to finalize the win.
  • The second set was an immediate exchange of points between kills from Sheyenne Williams and Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.), Skourtis and Majenski would continue their pairs of kills to counter the Cougars attack. A late kill from Maria Avila (Goffstown, NH) would keep the Chargers alive but a service ace from the Cougars would end the momentum.
  • The Chargers would start the third set strong with a kill from first year Haley Hathorn (Hillsboro, NH) and a pair of aces from Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.). The Cougars would counter with a run of their own behind a pair of kills and continue to deliver offensively. The Chargers would attempt a late counter behind a couple of kills from Skourtis and Majenski, but in the end the Cougars would prevail.
Rapid Recap (Wellesley College) L (16-25, 10-25, 16-25):
  • The Chargers got out to a quick 4-1 lead over Wellesley with kills from Mollberg and Skourtis, but were quickly countered with a kill from Kate Giand and Rachel Xu. Wellesley would go on a run of their own behind a series of service aces and errors from the Chargers. The Chargers would go on to make a late run behind a service ace from Fontes, kill from senior Abby Williams (Brentwood, NH), and a series of attacking errors from the opponent. Eventually Wellesley would put together a string of kills to finalize the first set in their favor.
  • The second set was quickly in favor of the opponent behind a couple of service aces from Kaija Kunze-Hoeg. The Chargers would respond behind a kill and ace from first year Skourtis. And a pair of kills from Majenski. Wellesley would respond with a series of kills to back a seven point run which led to their second set victory.
  • The final set begin with eight quick points for Wellesley behind five kills and two service aces. The Chargers would respond behind a kill from Mollberg and Skourtis, but the opponent was quick to end the run with another service ace from Kunze-Hoeg. Williams would lead a late push for the Chargers with a service ace, but a kill from Kennedy Mayo led to a Wellesley victory.   
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Majenski shined in the first match leading the team with 11 kills and one dig. Skourtis would round out the attack with seven of her own kills and a block.
  • Brooke Patnode (Weare, NH) registered 33 assists on the day.
  • Defensively Fontes led the pack with 17 digs on the day to go with three aces.

The Chargers will continue their road trip on Wednesday at Curry College for a 6:00PM start.
