Chargers Drop Opener to Roger Williams University

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team came up short Friday night falling to Roger Williams University by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-20) final.  
 
Rapid Recap:  

  • The Hawks jumped ahead 5-1 in the first set before trading points back and forth with the Chargers. Junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) picked up the first kill of the year for CSC finishing home an assist from junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.). Other kills by first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.), junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.) were not enough as Roger Williams won by a 25-12 margin.  
  • The second set was headlined by an 11-1 start by the Hawks. Mollberg added a kill, but Roger Williams continued to thrive taking a 21-9 advantage. The Chargers went on their best run of the set getting three-straight points including an ace by first year Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.), but the Chargers fell 25-9.  
  • The Chargers took an early 4-2 lead in the third set behind errors from the Hawks coupled with a kill from first year Ari Cuevas (Somersworth, N.H.), and service ace from junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.). The Hawks were quick to respond with kills from Winsten, and Kaylee Jackson. A Majenski kill followed by a Hawks attacking error kept the Chargers ahead by a 10-9 margin, but a counter 6-0 run put the home team back in front. The Chargers continued to battle countering with a 5-1 run on a kill from Mollberg and ace by Patnode, but the Hawks held on late winning 25-20.  

Inside The Numbers:  

  • Mollberg, Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.), and Cuevas led the offense with two kills apiece. 
  •  Patnode added seven assists to the stat sheet along with one block on the evening.  
  • Defensively Fontes led the way with 11 digs followed by junior Brenna Humpage (Scarborough, Maine) who added five digs on the night.  

Up Next:  
The Chargers will continue play in the Roger Williams Invitational tomorrow with matches at 10:00AM against Clark University and 12:00PM against Wellesley College.
