Chargers Pickup 17-6 Win on Senior Day Against Lasell University

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team improved to 6-2 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on Saturday picking up a 17-6 win against Lasell University. Before the game seniors Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.), Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) and Caleigh Dirks (Danvers, Mass.) were honored for their contributions along with junior Ella Lyford (Orange, Vt.) as part of the senior day festivities.

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers started out of the gates fast with a goal just 20 seconds in by junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) on a feed by first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.). The lead doubled just 34 seconds later as Stevens finished home a score from Romo. After the Wildcats were stopped by a save from sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) the Chargers got two more goals as Stevens finished a free position goal followed by another free position strike by sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.). Another free position goal from Hanson had Colby-Sawyer up 5-0 before Marquis and Stevens each added goals before the first quarter ended to give the home team a 7-0 lead. 
  • Marquis' second goal of the day kicked off the second quarter, but the Lasers finally found the offense getting there first goal with 11:41 remaining in the first half. Hanson responded with her third goal of the day, but Lasell fought bck getting there second strike to cut the deficit to 9-2. Marquis notched the hat trick with 7:12 to play in the second quarter kick, before first year Sophie Pedro (Scituate, R.I.) closed out the half with her fourth goal of the season. 
  • Hanson provided the 12-2 lead for the Chargers, netting her fourth of the day, but the Lasers battled back with three-straight goals to cut the lead to just seven goals. First year Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) ended the run with the final goal of the third quarter on a pass from Marquis. 
  • Sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) added her name to the scoring sheet to kick off the fourth quarter before Lyford put the lead back at 10 goals on a pass from Kuhlthau. Colby-Sawyer continued to add goals as Stevens finished goal number 16 of the day. The highlight goal of the day came as the last one for the Chargers as Hanson found Stevens who hit first year Anika Jenkins (Tyngsboro, Mass.) for the fancy finish. Lasell would answer with the final goal of the day to fall 17-6. 
Player Spotlight:
"Today we had fun and played our game", said senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.). "We were aggressive and played as a team. It is so fun to be apart of this team with these amazing people and coaches."
 
Stats & Figures:
  • Stevens led the offensive output with four goals and two helpers to go with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Hanson was next with four goals, two assists, eight grounders and five caused turnovers. Marquis tallied three goals and an assist. 
  • Paton earned the win with two saves to improve her record to 8-4.

The Chargers will travel to Nashua to take on Rivier University on Wednesday April 12th.
