Chargers Win 5th Straight Game in 16-2 Thrashing of Rivier University

NASHUA, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse picked up their fifth-consecutive victory on Wednesday night defeating Rivier University by a 16-2 final. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers kicked off the scoring in the first quarter as senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) finished a goal after a ground ball. Sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) was next with a free position strike to double the lead with 11:38 remaining in the first. The Raiders cut the lead to a single goal again, but after the strike the Chargers would counter as Stevens picked up her second goal of the game. Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) made a pair of saves to end the first to keep the visitors in front 3-1. 
  • In the second quarter the Chargers dominated to a 5-0 quarter to take a 8-1 lead into the break. Kuhlthau kicked off the scoring with another free position goal. Senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) was next finishing a goal after picking up a ground ball. Sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, N.H.), junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) and junior Ella Lyford (Orange, Vt.) each added goals to end the first half. 
  • Another 5-0 quarter followed for the Chargers to add to the rout. First year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) kicked things off with a goal on a clear. Stevens followed it up finishing a pass from Marquis, before a Romo unassisted strike pushed the game to 11-1. Hanson closed out the third quarter with back-to-back strikes to give the visitors all the momentum headed into the final frame. 
  • In the final frame the Chargers picked up goal number 14 as Romo scored a free position goal with 14:31 to play. Romo picked up her fourth of the day finishing a pass from Stevens. Marquis closed out the Charger scoring taking a 16-1 lead with 7:39 left. The Raiders picked up their second goal with just 36 seconds to play to end the game.
Player Spotlight:
"I'm really proud of the way we were all able to come together tonight and play as a team", said junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.). The defense, midfield, and attack were all connecting and we stayed composed under pressure. We were able to execute the things we've been working really hard on and it gave us a win to be proud of."
 
Stats & Figures:
  • Romo led the offense for the Chargers with a career-best four goals to go with three ground balls. Hanson registered three goals, seven ground balls, and seven draw controls, while Stevens added three goals, an assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. 
  • Ponzini led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers to go with two ground balls and a goal. 
  • Paton picked up her ninth win of the season making three saves. Junior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) closed out the game making a pair of saves in the win.

The Chargers will travel to West Hartford, Conn. to take on the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday, April 15th for a 1:00 PM start.
