Chargers Tripped Up by University of Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse five-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday dropping a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup to the University of Saint Joseph by a 13-9 final.

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers trailed early before senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) tied the game up with her 32nd goal of the year. After falling behind again the Chargers took their first lead after three-straight free position goals with two coming from sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) and another by first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) to take a 4-2 lead. The Blue Jays ended the quarter scoring a goal to keep the game a one score contest after one quarter. 
  • The Blue Jays continued their momentum early in the second quarter tying the game yet again before sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) gave Colby-Sawyer the lead hitting a free-position goal. The University of Saint Joseph continued to battle knotting the game up once again, but the Chargers responded as Kuhlthau and junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) each scored to put the visitors in front 7-5. The Blue Jays again ended the period strong finishing the sixth goal of the day to cut the deficit to one headed into the second half.
  • USJ tied things up early in the third quarter before scoring four more times later in the quarter to take a 11-7 lead headed into the fourth quarter. 
  • The run continued for the Blue Jays pushing the lead to 12-7 with 13:26 left to play. Hanson tried to get the Chargers offense rolling with a score from first year Sophie Pedro (Scituate, R.I.), but another goal by the Blue Jays kept the lead at 13-8 with 10:21 to play. The teams went back and forth unable to score until Stevens finished home a goal from Pedro to close out the scoring. 
Stats & Figures:
  • Kuhlthau led the offense with three goals to go with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Hanson followed with two goals, nine ground balls, six caused turnovers and four draw controls. Stevens also added two goals to go with eight grounders and four caused turnovers. 
  • Sophomore Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) had a big day on the defensive end with six caused turnovers and five ground balls. 
  • Pedro led the passing effort with two assists in the loss.
  • Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up the loss making a pair of saves. Junior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) closed out the game making a save.
Up Next:
The Chargers will host Norwich University on Wednesday with a 4:00 PM start.
