STANDISH, Maine – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team battled to the end against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday, falling by a 14-11 final.
Rapid Recap:
- Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) started off the game for the Chargers making a key stop which led sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) down the field for an early score on a feed from sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.). Colby-Sawyer kept the offense going as first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) drew the harm and then finished the free position strike to double the visitor lead. The Monks countered with three-straight goals to take the lead, but Hanson answered to not the game up with 3:39 to play in the first quarter. Megan Mourmouras put the home team back in front with 2:50 to play, but the lead stayed at 4-3 after another key stop by Paton.
- The Monks extended the lead to 7-3 with three more goals in the first four minutes of the second quarter, but Kuhlthau halted the run with back-to-back free position strikes. Carson Battaglia added a free position for the Monks to keep the 8-5 lead. After another Paton save the Chargers went on the attack as Kuhlthau picked up a grounder and deposited it into the back of the net to bring Colby-Sawyer within two goals headed into the break.
- The second half started like the beginning of the game as Paton saved a shot which found the stick of Hanson for the goal to put the deficit at 8-7. The Monks and Chargers traded goals before a Lydia Dexter tally put the Monks up 10-8 headed into the final 15 minutes.
- The Monks picked up another goal to extend the lead back to three goals, but Hanson countered with a free position goal to keep the deficit to two. First year Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) found the back of the net next for the Chargers to get the game back to a single goal with 9:17 remaining, but two goals by the home team pushed the lead back to three with time running out. Kuhlthau netted the final strike for the Chargers with 3:18 left as Colby-Sawyer would fall by a 14-11 margin.
Stats & Figures:
- Hanson hit a career-milestone in the loss registering her 100th career goal in just 33 games as a Charger. Heather led the offense with five goals to go with three grounders.
- Kuhlthau registered four goals and an assist, while Ponzini and Bronson added the other goals.
- Sophomore Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
- Paton picked up the loss stopping nine shots.
- Dexter led the Monks with four goals, two assists and two draw controls.
