Chargers Come Up Short in Final Home Game of the Regular Season to Johnson & Wales University

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team came up short during their last home game of the regular season falling to Johnson & Wales University by a 13-8 final score. The Chargers drop to an 8-4 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record with the loss to the Wildcats.

Rapid Recap: 
  • Sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) put the Chargers up 1-0 in the opening five minutes of the first quarter. The Wildcats responded with a goal by Madeleine Gould off the assist from Margaret Johnson tying the game at 1-1.  Johnson & Wales would add two quick goals in the seventh minute to extend their advantage to 3-1.  In the final minutes of the first quarter, the Wildcats notched two more goals ending the quarter with a 5-1 lead.  
  • Johnson & Wales continued to push their attack with Gould tallying a hattrick to make it 6-1. After sophomore Hannah Himes (Willison, Vt.) picked up a caused turnover to regain possession, sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Chesire, Conn.) would then put the ball in the back of the net from the free position to make it 6-2. Maris DiBeneditto tallied her second goal of the match at the 3:58 mark extending the Wildcats led by five goals. With 10 seconds left on the clock, senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) registered her first goal of the match from the free position making it 7-3 heading into halftime.
  • Colby-Sawyer's attack started to click in the third quarter with Hanson and junior Ella Lyford (Orange, Vt.) each notching a goal apiece with senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) picking up an assist to bring the score to 8-5. Stevens would later tally her second goal of the game at the 4:55 mark to narrow the Wildcats advantage to two goals. Johnson & Wales would end the quarter ahead 10-6 after earning a pair of goals in the final two minutes.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, Marquis got a shot off that would be saved by the Wildcats goalkeeper. Taina Gamory and DiBeneditto would both register a goal apiece to extend Johnson & Wales led to 12-6. Shortly after, the Chargers responded by burying back-to-back goals from Kuhlthau and junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) to make it 12-8. The Wildcats would add one more goal to secure the win over the Chargers by a final score of 13-8.  
Stats & Figures:
  • Kuhlthau, Hanson, and Stevens all led the Chargers attack with two goals apiece. Himes ended the day with four ground balls and five caused turnovers for Colby-Sawyer while Hanson and Marquis each earned an assist.
  • Paton picked up the loss after playing in net for the full 60 minutes making nine saves and allowing 13 goals.
  • Gould and DiBeneditto scored four goals apiece for the Wildcats while Gamory registered a goal, three assists, two ground balls, and a caused turnover.

The Chargers will travel to Standish, Maine for their last regular game of the season against Saint Joseph's College of Maine starting at 6:00 PM.
