Chargers Can't Hold on Against Plymouth State University

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team suffered a non-conference loss on Thursday dropping a contest to Plymouth State University by a 11-10 final in extra innings.  
 
Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as first year Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) singled in first year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) and senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). The Panthers responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run by Sam Malgeri. Colby-Sawyer added two more in the top half of the third as Carignan singled in senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) before first year Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice scoring O'Brien. 
  • In the top of the fourth inning the Chargers got three more runs as first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) tripled in first year Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) before Choiniere doubled home Watson to extend the lead to 7-1. The Chargers bullpen kept the lead at 7-1 headed into the seventh inning before two more insurance runs crossed the plate for the visitors as Carignan scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Ben Mensch (Tampa, Fla.) singled in MacLennan. In the bottom of the inning the Panthers' bats erupted getting five runs on five hits and an error. 
  • Colby-Sawyer added another run in the eighth as Carignan doubled in O'Brien, but the Panthers quickly responded with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to knot the game up at 10-10 headed into extras. Plymouth State picked up the walk-off in the 10th with a single to right center field. 
On the Mound:
  • First year Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) started the game for the Chargers going three innings allowing one run with a strikeout. First year Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.), first year Noah Wolgamott (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) did their job out of the bullpen each throwing a scoreless frame of work. First year Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) followed allowing five runs in one inning with three strikeouts. Junior Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) came in next allowing two runs and just getting one out. Junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) pitched the rest of the eighth and ninth inning allowing two runs both unearned with five strikeouts. Sophomore Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) picked up the loss getting two outs in the 10th allowing the one run. 
At the Plate:
  • Carignan led the offense with another three hit day with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a stolen base. Watson went 3-for-5 with a triple, run scored and two RBI.

The Chargers will face off with Anna Maria College tomorrow in Marlborough, Mass. with a 3:00 PM start time.
