Chargers Bested by Lasell University

NEWTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball teams suffered a pair of losses at the hands of Lasell University on Saturday falling in both games. 
 
Game 1 L (6-5):
  • The Lasers jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of hits and an error. The lead grew to 5-0 in the second on a sacrifice fly and a two-run blast. The Chargers slowly chipped away scoring three runs in the top half of the fourth inning on two hits. The scoring started with first year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) laced a double to left field scoring senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) and senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.). The Chargers added the third run on a sacrifice fly out by first year Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) scoring Carignan. 
  • In the top of the fifth inning the Chargers got closer as first year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) placed down a squeeze bunt scoring first year Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.). In the bottom of the frame the Lasers picked up their final run of the first game on a RBI single to right field. In the final inning the Chargers inched closer as Colby-Sawyer loaded the bases with two outs. MacLennan reached on an error to cut the lead to just a single run, but junior Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) popped out to the first baseman to close the game. 
  • Sophomore Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) picked up the loss tossing four and one-thirds innings allowing six runs on seven hits and five walks. Junior Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) closed out the game getting five outs while striking out two batters. 
  • The offense was led by Carignan who had a 2-for-3 performance with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. O'Brien added a 1-for-2 day with two runs scored. 
Game 2 L (18-2):
  • The Lasers took the early lead again in the first inning scoring on a double to left center. The Chargers countered in the fourth inning starting with drawing three-straight walks to open the inning. With the bases loaded junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) grounded into a fielder's choice to score the opening run before first year Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) grounded out to the second baseman to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead. 
  • Lasell Unviersity would punch back hard in the bottom of the fourth tallying 13 runs on nine hits and two errors to take control of the game. The Lasers erupted for three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on four hits to push the lead to 17-2. Lasell would add one final run in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring. 
  • First year Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) picked up the loss tossing three and two-thirds innings allowing 11 runs (four earned) with two strikeouts. Miller followed getting one out with three runs (zero earned) allowed. First year Ethan Clark (Bow, N.H.) was next tossing an inning giving up three earned runs. First year Noah Wolgamott (Manchester, N.H.) closed out the game with a final inning allowing one run. 
  • First year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) led the offense in the second game going 2-for-3 with a walk. Carignan and Schmitt added a 1-for-2 day.
Up Next:
The Chargers will be back in action Sunday hosting Albertus Magnus for a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
