NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team picked up their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win on Wednesday afternoon during a twin bill against Norwich University. The Chargers are now 1-7 in conference play after winning game two of the doubleheader.
Game 1 L (5-4):
- The Cadets took an early 1-0 led after Abel Oropeza singled to right field bringing PJ Morales in to score. The Chargers offense started to click in the bottom of the fourth when first year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) singled to left center. With the bases loaded, senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) walked tying the game at 1-1. First year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) reached first on an error by the Cadets third baseman giving Colby-Sawyer a 2-1 advantage. The Chargers would end the inning up 3-1 after sophomore Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to score first year Cam Martin (Winthrop, Mass.).
- In the top of the fifth inning, Norwich kept the score close after Tyler Callahan brought a run in off a single up the middle. The following inning, the Cadets put three runs on the board off three hits to take back a 5-3 led. The Chargers were able to score one run in the bottom of the seventh but would end game one with a loss by a 5-4 final score.
- Junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) picked up the loss after pitching the entire seven innings for Colby-Sawyer. He allowed five earned runs off 10 hits to go along with five punchouts.
- Montalvo led the offense going 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run. First year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) and Lewis each had a 1-for-3 performance in game one.
Game 2 W (11-9):
- The Chargers jumped to a quick 3-0 led started by a single from senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) scoring Watson and ended with O'Brien tagging home after first year Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) reached on an error. Colby-Sawyer continued to add runs in the bottom of the second inning kicked started by an RBI double from Watson to make 4-0. Montalvo then doubled bringing to bring Watson home and put the Chargers ahead 5-0. O'Brien would earn an RBI double to end the inning with Colby-Sawyer up 6-0.
- In the top of the third, Zeb Perreault homered to right field giving Norwich their first run of game two. The Chargers extended their lead to 8-1 thanks to RBI singles by Watson and Choiniere.
- The Cadets scored one run off three hits in the top of the fourth to make it 8-2. The Chargers responded in the bottom of the inning by adding a pair runs after first year Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly and Rogers scored on a wild pitch to take an eight-run advantage.
- Norwich put up five runs in the top of the fifth inning reducing Colby-Sawyer's led to just three runs. Choiniere made it 11-7 after singling to right center to bring Watson in to score. The Cadets kept battling in the top of the sixth scoring one run off an RBI single from Jakob Hayes to make it 11-8. After a scoreless seventh inning, Morales brought another run off a single for the Cadets in the eighth, but the Chargers would secure their first conference win of the season winning by a final score of 11-9.
