Chargers Swept by Rivier University

CONCORD, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team were routed by Rivier University on Monday during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.
 
Game 1 L (7-2):
  • After two scoreless innings, the Raiders took a 1-0 led in the bottom of the third after sophomore Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) threw a wild pitch allowing Dylan Aliberti to score. In the bottom of the fourth, Rivier added six runs off four hits featuring two doubles from Aliberti and Jacob Boudreau to give the Raiders a 7-0 advantage. 
  • First year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) started the top of the fifth with a home run to get the Chargers on the board and make it 7-1. In the following inning, Carignan doubled to right center bringing senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) in to score ending game one with the Raiders winning by a 7-2 final score.
  • Mullen picked up the loss after pitching for five innings for the Chargers. He recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts against the Raiders. Junior Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) pitched the final inning going a clean inning with a punch out. 
  • Carignan led the offense with going 3-for-3 with his first collegiate home run, two doubles and two RBI. First year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) went 2-for-2 with a double, walk and stolen base, while O'Brien added a 1-for-3 game one with a double and a run scored. 
Game 2 L (15-10):
  • The Raiders jumped ahead early will a leadoff homer by Aliberti. The lead grew to three runs in the second on an RBI single by Alberti and an error by the pitcher. Colby-Sawyer finally got on the board in the fourth inning as Carignan reached first on an error by the first baseman which scored O'Brien. Rivier countered with two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth to pull ahead 6-1. 
  • The Chargers battled back in the fifth inning as tallying four runs on two hits and two errors. It started with Watson reaching first on an error to score senior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.). First year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) followed it up with a double down the third base line to score a pair. O'Brien scored the final run of the top of the inning with a sac fly to left field scoring Montalvo. In the bottom of the fifth the Raiders found their bats scoring six runs on five hits to take control back at 12-5.
  • Colby-Sawyer fought back again in the sixth inning as Watson singled in Carignan to cut the deficit to six. The lead was trimmed to three as senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) cleared the bases with a rocket double into the gap. Rivier responded with three more in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to six runs once again. The Chargers picked up one final run in the seventh as Turpel singled up the middle to score Carignan.
  • First year Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) picked up the loss tossing four innings allowing six runs with three strikeouts. First year Ethan Clark (Bow, N.H.) was next allowing five runs and getting one out. First year Noah Wolgamott (Manchester, N.H.) followed with one inning of work giving up four runs and punching out two. Miller came back to the mound in game two with an inning and two-thirds with a strikout and no runs allowed. Junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) closed things out by striking out the side in the eighth. 
  • Montalvo led the offense in the second game going 2-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and a double. Choiniere led the team in runs-batted-in going 1-for-4 with the bases clearing double. Turpel added a 1-for-2 performance scoring two runs, and a walk.

The Chargers will host Norwich University on Wednesday April 12th for another doubleheader.
