Chargers Upended By Elms College

HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team were upended by Elms College on Sunday during their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader of the season. The Chargers are now 0-2 in conference play while the Blazers improve to 10-3 overall on the year.
 
Game 1 L(6-5):
  • The Chargers put up a run in the top of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly out by senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) to bring first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) home. In the bottom of the first, the Blazers tied the game at 1-1 following an RBI from Aaron Young.
  • After a scoreless second inning, senior Max Lewis (Durham, N.H.) brought first year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) home after grounding out to third base making it a 2-1 game. In the bottom of third inning, Elms got two runs off three hits to take a 3-2 advantage.
  • Colby-Sawyer responded in the top of the fifth inning by loading up the bases. Lewis stepped up to the plate and reached first on an error to tie the game at 3-3. First year Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) and senior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) each tallied an RBI apiece to put the Chargers ahead 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, the Blazers would once again tie the game at 5-5 following a double by Seamus Higgins.
  • The Chargers held off the Blazers in the bottom of the seventh to force the game into extra innings. After strong defensive efforts from both teams, Elms would earn the win in the bottom of the 11th inning after Tyler Galenski hit a sacrifice fly out to defeat the Chargers by a 6-5 final score.
  • Junior Zach Rogers pitched seven innings for the Chargers allowing 10 hits and five runs (three earned) to go along with nine punchouts. Sophomore Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) tossed for two clean innings giving up one walk and notching a strikeout. First year Ethan Clark (Bow, N.H.) picked up the loss after allowing three hits and one earned run.
  • Choiniere led the offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and one RBI. McLeer added a 1-for-3 performance with a double and one RBI while Montalvo went 3-for-6 with a stolen base.
Game 2 L(7-1):
  • The Blazers started the second game by taking an early 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the second, first year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) cut the deficit in half after doubling to left field to bring Rogers home. Elm's offense was able to generate four runs off two hits in the bottom of the second inning to extend their led to 6-1.
  • After three scoreless innings, the Blazers added another run in the bottom of the sixth after AJ Cook hit a sacrifice fly out to right field making it a 7-1 game. Colby-Sawyer's bats couldn't answer in the top of the seventh ending the game with Elms winning by a 7-1 final score.
  • Sophomore Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) started for the Chargers and picked up the loss after pitching one inning allowing six earned runs off three hits. First year Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) tossed for four innings allowing one run off four hits along with two strikeouts.
  • Rogers led the Charger offense going 1-for-3 with a triple and a run. Carignan had a 1-for2 performance including a double and one RBI while senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) went 2-for-3 featuring a double.

The Chargers will play their next GNAC doubleheader against Rivier University on Saturday, April 1st in Manchester, N.H. starting at 12:00 PM.
