Chargers Roll Past Elms College 18-10

CHICOPEE, Mass.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up their third-straight victory on Saturday defeating Elms College by a 18-10 final. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Blazers picked up the opening goal just 30 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) evened the score with a free position strike at the 11:28 mark. The Chargers took the lead just over 30 seconds later as senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) scored on an assist by junior Ella Lyford (Orange, Vt.). Elms College battled back with a strike to knot the game up at 2-2, but the Chargers held onto the lead with a left-handed strike by Lyford. The Blazers would tie the game again at 3-3, but this time Colby-Sawyer would go on a 4-0 run to lead 7-3 after one quarter. Sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.), first year Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.), first year Molly Dishong (Francestown, N.H.) and Hanson each put home a score during the run.
  • Junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) started the scoring for the Chargers expanding the lead to 8-3. After another lead by Elms, Hanson picked up back-to-back goals to extend the lead. Lyford and Hanson each added another goal to push the lead to 12-4, before the Blazers ended the first half with a final strike. 
  • Kuhlthau's second goal of the day kicked off the second half sparking a 4-0 run. Romo, Kuhlthau and Hanson added goals each to push the lead to 11 goals. The Blazers added two-straight points, but Hanson closed the quarter in style winning the draw and scoring at the buzzer.
  • Sophomore Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) started off the fourth quarter with two caused turnovers and ground balls. With the clock continuing to run Romo added her third of the day to keep the lead at 18-7. The Blazers ended the day with three-straight goals, but the Chargers held on for the 18-10 win. 
Player Spotlight:
"Today, we came out with high energy and intensity to set the tone", said sophomore Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.). We were able to come together and focus on what unites us as a team, love."

Stats & Figures:
  • Hanson led the offense with a career-best seven goals to go along with an assist, nine draw controls and three ground balls. Kuhlthau and Romo each tallied hat-tricks. Lyford picked up two goals, two assists, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Bronson, Dishong and Stevens each added a goal on their own.
  • Himes was a star for the Chargers on defense today with a career-high five caused turnovers to go with six ground balls. Sophomore Emma Webster (Campton, N.H.) added three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. 
  • Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up her fourth win of the season with eight saves in net. 
  • Elms College was led by Elise Paier who contributed three goals and two assists on the day.
Up Next:
The Chargers will head to Boston, Mass. to take on Simmons University on Monday March 27th with a 7:00 PM start.
