BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team was defeated by Simmons University during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Monday night by a 21-5 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Sharks offense took control early in the first quarter scoring two goals in the opening five minutes of the game. Sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) registered a shot on target that was saved by the Simmons goalkeeper. Shortly after, Marita Nothacker scored back-to-back goals in the seventh minute to make it 4-0. Simmons would tally five more goals featuring two from Frida Turriza to take a 9-0 lead headed into the second quarter.
- Sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) started the second quarter by getting a shot off that was saved by the Sharks goalkeeper. Simmons continued to put pressure on the Chargers defense by adding a pair of goals making it an 11-0 game. Following a shot attempt by senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.), Julia Chausse would later score the 12th goal for the Sharks off the assist by Kat Wood. Simmons tallied two more goals before the end of the quarter to head into the half with a 14-0 advantage.
- In the third quarter, the Sharks would take a 15-0 lead after Nothacker notched her fourth goal of the night. Senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) broke the Chargers goal drought off the assist from Marquis to make it 15-1. The Sharks responded by registering three goals, two from Abby Stoller, to take an 18-1 lead.
- Simmons started the final quarter by scoring at the 10:55 mark to make it 19-1, but Colby-Sawyer countered by notching three-consecutive goals from first year Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) and a pair of goals from Hanson to make it 19-4. Following two more goals from the Sharks to extend their advantage to 21-4, first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) scored from the free position to end the game with a 21-5 final score.
Stats & Figures:
- Hanson led the offense with two goals and six ground balls. Ponzini, Bronson, and Stevens each ended the night with a goal apiece while Marquis tallied two assists.
- Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) and junior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) both made a save for the Chargers in the loss.
- Stoller and Nothacker led the Sharks with four goals and an assist each, while Nicole Elliott made 10 saves in the win.
