Hanson Eclipses 100 Points as Chargers Down Castleton University 20-7

CASTLETON, Vt.  – Sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) hit career point number 100 on Monday night as the Chargers defeated Castleton University by a 20-7 final. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Spartans took an early 1-0 advantage early in the first quarter, but the lead did not stay for long as senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) finished home a goal on a pass by sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.). Just 14 seconds later Castleton responded as Phoebe Loomis took the draw and beat the keeper to give the home team the lead. Kuhlthau evened the game a minute later on a pass from Hanson. Senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) finally gave the Chargers their first lead of the night beating the keeper to lead 3-2. Castleton knotted the game up one final time at 3-3 with 7:39 left in the first. Colby-Sawyer punched back with back-to-back goals as Stevens finished another pass from Hanson before first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) finished a free position shot to add to the lead. The Spartans finished off the first quarter with one final strike to cut the deficit to 5-4 headed into the second. 
  • Colby-Sawyer used a dominant 6-0 second quarter to advance the lead into the second half. It started with back-to-back caused turnovers by sophomore Emma Webster (Campton, N.H.) which led free position goal by Kuhlthau. The captains connected for the next goal as Stevens found Marquis for the finish. Stevens was next beating the keeper on a pass from Ponzini to double the Charger lead to 8-4. The ninth goal of the day for the visitors was from junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) who ripped a shot past the Spartans. First year Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) added her name to the score-sheet next with her first collegiate goal with a driving score. Kuhlthau added her 19th of the season to end the first half with the Chargers leading 11-4. 
  • The Spartans started a comeback with two-straight scores to cut the deficit to five, but Romo stopped the run with a goal on an assist by Ponzini. Stevens powered home her fourth of the day on a pass from Hanson to get the lead back to seven. Hanson added back-to-back goals before Kuhlthau ended the third with another strike to push the lead to 10 goals headed into the final frame. 
  • Kuhlthau tallied goal number 17 for the Chargers to start the fourth quarter. The Spartans added one final goal before the Chargers ended the game with the final three scores. 
Player Spotlight:
"Our defense played strong and confidently while our midfielders were able to really take control of the draw", said sophomore Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.). We continued to carry that high energy into the attacking end. Tonight, we played as one team, and we were able to win as one."

Stats & Figures:
  • Hanson surpassed 100 points in just 22 collegiate games on 62 goals and 39 assists. 
  • Hanson led the offense with four goals and three assists to go along with six ground balls and nine draw controls. Kuhlthau was leading goal scorer on the night six goals to go with five draws, four ground balls and an assist. Stevens registered a big night with four goals an assist and seven ground balls. 
  • Romo and Marquis picked up a par of strikes, while Ponzini added a goal and two assists. Bronson picked up collegiate goal number one while also picking up another assist. 
  • Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) had a pair of saves in the win playing 45 minutes. Junior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) added three saves in the final 15 minutes.

The Chargers will face off with Elms College in Chicopee, Mass. for a matchup on Saturday, March 25th.
