HOOKSETT, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team returned to New Hampshire following their spring break trip, picking up a 18-5 victory over Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Albertus Magnus College on Saturday at Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.
Rapid Recap:
- The Falcons picked up the first goal on a nifty pass just four minutes into the game. The Chargers responded with 11-0 run in the next 21 minutes of game action. Sophomore Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) started off the scoring with a free position strike just a minute after the opening goal. Junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) gave the Chargers the lead with goal on a pass from junior Ella Lyford (Orange, Vt.). Senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) was next with a strike on a beautiful assist by sophomore Heather Hanson (Marstons Mills, Mass.). Senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) finished off the first quarter putting one past the keeper to give the Chargers a 4-1 lead headed into the second.
- Kuhlthau continued to score in the second with back-to-back goals from Hanson to push the lead to six. After a free position goal by Marquis, Kuhlthau scored her fourth of the day this time by a pass by Romo, before finishing the next goal to push the lead to 9-1 with 10:21 in the first half. First year Molly Dishong (Francetown, N.H.) picked up her first collegiate goal next on the first collegiate assist by first year Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.). First year Sophie Pedro (Scituate, R.I.) added the 11th consecutive goal for the home team on a driving finish. The Falcons finally stopped the run with a finish with 2:07 to play in the first half, but Stevens quickly responded getting a pass from Marquis and hitting the back of the net to end the first half.
- Romo started off the second half with a snipe past the Falcons keeper to add to the Charger lead. Hanson finally got a goal with 9:58 left in the third quarter via Marquis to extend the lead to 14-2. Albertus put together their best run of the day with two goals in the remaining six minutes of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 10 with the final 15 minutes remaining.
- In the fourth quarter sophomore Olivia Witter (North Adams, Mass.) picked up her second collegiate goal finishing a pass from Hanson. Hanson followed that up with a score of her own this time on a pass from Bronson. First year Anika Jenkins (Tyngsboro, Mass.) added her first collegiate goal to push the lead to 17-4. Albertus scored one final goal, but Kuhlthau ended the game with her 16th of the season to clinch the win.
Player Spotlight:
"It felt good to be back in New Hampshire after our spring break", said sophomore
Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.). "We were able to work together and connect better across all positions. We're hoping to get back in the grove of things as we have a lot of games coming up in the next few weeks."
Stats & Figures:
- Kuhlthau led the offense with six goals to match a career-best. Sophia added two ground balls and five draw controls.
- Hanson added a big day in the midfield with two goals, four assists and seven ground balls. Marquis tallied two goals, two assists, four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Stevens and Romo each added a pair of goals, while Jenkins, Pedro, Dishong and Witter each managed a single score.
- Paton picked up the win with four saves in 45 minutes of action. Junior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) finished off the game making a save.
