Chargers Bested By Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team were bested by Middlebury College on Wednesday evening during their final non-conference match by a 55-38 final score. Sophomore Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) scored a career-high 17 points for the Chargers in their defeat to the Panthers. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Panthers took an early 8-0 lead to start the first quarter of the game that was kicked off by a made three pointer from Alexa Mustafaj. Panagrosso got the Chargers on the scoreboard after finishing her jumper to make it 8-2. Colby-Sawyer closed the scoring gap thanks to the effort by Panagrosso with a turnaround jumper and sophomore Marissa Holt (Alferd, Maine) who knocked down a triple to bring the score to 12-8. Mustafaj would hit another three for Middlebury to end the quarter at 15-8.
  • In the second quarter, Claire Miller added a couple points to the Panthers led after making a jumper. Senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) responded by hitting a three ball to make it 17-11. The Chargers continued to battle on offensive as Holt finished a driving layup and first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) completed a free throw to keep the score close at 19-14. Middlebury went on a 7-2 run with sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Brandford, Conn.) making a layup to earn her first points of the game. Holt would hit her second three of the evening ending the quarter with the Panthers holding a 26-19 advantage heading into halftime. 
  • Mitchell opened the scoring for Colby-Sawyer in the third quarter after finishing a layup, but Middlebury would extend their led into double-digits after Mustafaj's and-one bucket. The Panthers would then go on a 12-0 run to end the quarter at 43-21.
  • In the final quarter, senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) finished a free throw after being fouled by Leah Poorman. Shortly after, Panagrosso knocked down a triple for the Chargers off the assist from Mitchell. Panagrosso would go on to score 10 of the final 12 points for Colby-Sawyer in the quarter, but Middlebury would earn the win with a final score of 55-38. 
Stats & Figures:
  • Panagrosso finished the game with a career-high 17 points (6-8 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 3-3 FT) along with two rebounds and a block. Holt ended the day with nine points (3-10 FG, 2-3 3-FG, 1-2 FT) to go along with three rebounds, one assist, and a steal. Mitchell had eight rebounds and two assists in the game scoring four points (1-7 FG, 2-4 FT) for the Chargers. 
  • Mustafaj scored 25 points (10-17 FG, 3-5 3-FG, 2-3 FT) for the Panthers along with a rebound and an assist. 
  • The Panthers outshot the Chargers 36.9% to 27.7% from the field with Colby-Sawyer holding a 22-18 margin in points off the bench.

The Chargers will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday, February 11th against Anna Maria College with tipoff at 2:00 PM.
