Chargers Fall to Clark University in First Game Back

WORCESTER, Mass.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped its seventh game of the 2023-24 campaign on Saturday afternoon falling to Clark University by a 66-39 final in the first game after winter break.

Rapid Recap:
  • Sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) kicked off the game with a layup to give the Chargers the lead, but the Cougars responded with a 7-0 run. First year Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) buried a three to trim the deficit to just a bucket midway through the quarter, but the home team punched back with a closing 6-2 run to hold a 13-7 lead after one quarter. 
  • Junior Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) kicked off the second with a three from the elbow on an assist by junior Marissa Holt, but the Cougars responded with 16-consecutive points to hold a 29-10 lead into halftime. 
  • The Cougars ballooned the lead to 47-15 midway through the third quarter. Colby-Sawyer used a pair of buckets by junior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) and a three by graduate student Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) to keep the scoring going. The Chargers showed fight with a closing 7-3 run in the third quarter closed by a bucket for junior Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) to put the score at 54-25 headed into the final frame. 
  • Another layup by Panagrosso kicked off the fourth, but the Cougars added three more points to lead by 30 with 9:24 to play. Holt kick started another solid spurt for the Chargers followed by a finish by Mitchell. Sophomore Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) ended the game with her first bucket as a Charger drilling a triple as the Chargers fell by a 66-39 final.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mitchell continues to play well for the Chargers putting together six points (3-5 FG), a career-high 13 rebounds and a pair of steals. Brewster tallied six points (2-5 FG, 2-2 FT), nine rebounds and a block and a steal. Raynowska added four points (1-4 FG, 1-4 3PT, 1-2 FT), two blocks and two boards. 
  • Alaina Schatzabel led the Cougars with 16 points (6-14 FG, 4-4 FT) and seven boards.
  • Clark dominated the paint getting a 30-16 point advantage, while also getting 23 points off turnovers to Colby-Sawyer's 10 points off takeaways.

The Chargers will host Wellesley College on January 2nd with a 12:30 PM start in New London.
