UTICA, N.Y. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell in their fourth-consecutive game on Friday night falling to Utica University by a 95-60 final in the first leg of the Utica University Classic.
Rapid Recap:
- Junior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) kicked off the game for the Chargers getting a steal and a flush, but the Pioneers held an early 6-2 lead. A jumper by Cullum followed by a three-pointer by junior Owen Morse (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) put the visitors on top by a 7-6 score after four minutes. Utica collected the lead back with a vicious 18-3 run over seven minutes to lead 24-10. Back-to-back layups by Cullum and junior Jaisan Parker (Durham, N.C.) cut the deficit to just 12 points, but the Pioneers added six-straight to lead by a first half high of 18 points with 3:55 left in the half. Junior Mike Joanou (Burbank, Calif.) drilled a three to spark a closing 9-2 run from the Chargers who found themselves down by a 38-27 score into the break.
- Hagen Foley of Utica kicked off the second half in style with three-consecutive threes on an opening 15-0 run to push the lead to 26 points. Junior Bullen Taban (Phoenix, Ariz.) stopped the run with back-to-back layups, but another spurt saw the Pioneers up by 30 points with 12:10 to play. First year Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) had a good showing in the second half starting with back-to-back buckets part of a 5-0 Charger spurt, but Utica held strong growing the lead to a game-high 40 points with 5:30 to play. With under four minutes to play Colby-Sawyer had their best run of the game scoring a 11-2 run as the Pioneers would win by a 95-60 final.
Inside the Numbers:
- Peterson recorded his first collegiate double-double in the loss with career-bests in points (15)(7-11 FG, 1-2 FT) and rebounds (11). Cullum added another solid game with 16 points (7-13 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-2 FT), four steals and four rebounds. Taban added eight points (4-10 FG, 0-1 FT), 11 rebounds and a pair of rejections.
- Foley led the Pioneers with 19 points (7-10 FG, 5-6 3PT) and nine rebounds, while Damien Call added 10 points (5-8 FG, 0-1 3PT), eight rebounds and seven assists.
