Chargers Split Tri-Match on Senior Day

 NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team split their matches Saturday afternoon with a loss to Regis (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) and a victory over Albertus Magnus (25-10, 25-15, 25-21).  

Rapid Recap (Regis):
  • The Chargers started on a high note in the first set with a pair of kills from Junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.). The Pride would follow capitalizing off of errors from the home team and getting a kill from Kate Montigny. The teams would continue to battle back and forth with the Chargers seeing kills from first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.) and senior Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.). The Pride would find their first breakaway with a kill rom Montigny and Rita Dow bringing them up 16-12. Junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) would tab a kill to keep the Chargers hopes alive but a pair of service aces from the Pride would finalize the set.
  • The teams would continue their battle into the next set with Mollberg registering an early pair of kills and the Pride getting kills from Montigny. The Pride would jump ahead with a pair of service aces from Toni Ondris before the Chargers would take a timeout. Skourtis came out of the timeout swinging notching three quick kills and Mollberg tabbing two aces to even the score 8-8. The squads would exchange points before the Chargers would go on a four-point run behind kills from Mollberg, Majenski and first year Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.). The Pride responded with a run of their own stringing together kills and service aces to bring the score 17-14 in favor of the visitors. Mollberg would keep the Chargers in the set registering three more kills to stop the Pride momentum.  But a strong swing from the Pride would finalize the set.
  • Patnode would start the third set with a service ace that trickled over the net, followed by a kill from teammate Mollberg to put the Chargers up 2-0. The Pride would respond but the Chargers would take advantage off of the visitors' errors. The Chargers would build up a 17-11 lead off of a kill from Majenski and a service ace from junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.). The Pride would dig in to earn a service ace from Ondris and go on a run of points from Charger errors. Majenski and Skourtis would take turns with kills to put the Chargers up 21-17. A string of kills from the Pride evened the score at 22 and the teams would battle to 25. A kill from Montigny would finalize the Pride victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mollberg led the way with 11 kills, followed closely by Majenski and Williams each with eight kills.
  • Patnode registered 26 assists, seven digs, and one service ace.
  • Fontes led the defense with 11 digs.
Rapid Recap (Albertus):
  • The Chargers came out the gate firing against the Falcons jumping to an early 5-0 lead behind a kill from first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.) and a service ace from junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.). The home team would continue their dominance with junior Ally Majenski tabbing a kill and Skourtis raking in another. The Chargers would continue their run to a 17-6 with junior Katie Mollberg registering a pair of kills alongside senior Abby Williams. The Chargers would win the set with the final play being a dominant swing from Majenski.
  • The second set would begin with an exchange of points between the squads with Williams serving an ace and the Falcons responding with an ace of their own to even the score 5-5 early. The home team would capitalize on the Falcons errors to earn a 12-7 lead. Senior Jayden Lebron (Palm Bay, Fla.) would serve an ace to keep the momentum in the Colby-Sawyer favor, followed in suit by fellow senior Williams dishing an ace as well. Skourtis would round out the offensive flow notching a kill to put the score at 21-14 in favor of the home team. First year Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.) would have the final kill for the Chargers to secure their victory.
  • The third set was the most competitive of the day for the Chargers. The two teams would exchange points for the most of the set, with Majenski and Williams headlining the first kills for the home team. Junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) would deliver a pair of service aces before the Falcons would respond with a kill from Nathalie Wallace. Junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) took a swing at the ball in the middle of the set to register a kill for herself within the match. The Chargers would make headway at the end of the set with a kill from first year Ari Cuevas (Somersworth, N.H.) and a pair of kills from Majenski to win the match.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Skourtis led the offense with eight kills, but Williams shined in the match with six kills and five service aces.
  • Patnode would notch 26 assists with six digs.
  • Fontes led the way defensively with 11 digs, and one kill.
