BOSTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team finished off their season in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Play-In Tournament by a 3-2 (25-14, 25-19, 24-26, 24-26, 15-9) final to Emmanuel.
Rapid Recap:
- Senior Maria Avila (Goffstown, N.H.) started the match with an ace to give Colby-Sawyer the first point. The Saints took advantage back going on an 8-4 run. A 4-1 counter ended by a kill by senior Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.) to tie things up at 9-9. The game was knotted at 14-14, but a 11-0 run closed out the first set for Emmanuel.
- The Saints jumped ahead 11-6 in the second set stopped by a 3-0 run on a kill by junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) and an ace by Williams. Emmanuel held the 13-10 lead, but another four-straight Charger points ended by a kill for first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.) gave the visitors the lead. The game was tied at 16-16, before the home team fought to a 6-0 advantage en route to the 25-19 win in set two.
- The Chargers came out strong in the third set quickly jumping ahead 7-3 on two kills by junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) and two aces by junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.). The Saints stopped the momentum and evened the game at 10-10. After Emmanuel held a 13-12 lead the Chargers went to another level with a 6-1 run to take a 18-14 lead sparked by kills by Skourtis and first year Ari Cuevas (Somersworth, N.H.). With the game tied at 24-24, the Chargers battled for their season with Mollberg closed it out to head to the fourth set.
- The Saints stormed ahead by a 7-3 lead, but the Chargers slowly chipped away getting it down to 13-10. Colby-Sawyer added consecutive points to take the lead with three more kills for Majenski. Another 5-0 advantage later in the set gave the Chargers a 20-16 lead. The Saints evened the score at 24-24, but Majenski kept the season alive with a kill to give the visitors a 26-24 set win.
- Majenski kicked off the fifth set with a kill as the Chargers jumped ahead 2-0, but a 6-0 counter put the Saints in front. Colby-Sawyer tried to battle back but Emmanuel closed it out 15-9.
Inside the Numbers:
- Skourtis led the offense with a career-high 13 kills to go with three digs. Majenski followed with 10 kills.
- Junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) had a big day with 33 assists, 14 digs, and three aces.
- Defensively Fontes had 16 digs to lead the way, while Avila added nine.
