Chargers Drop GNAC Match to Rivier

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team fell on Tuesday night to Rivier by a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 28-26) final.

Rapid Recap:

  • The Raiders trailed the Chargers early by a 5-3 margin behind a kill by first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.), but the visitors battled back to take a 8-6 lead.  Rivier continued to find success jumping the lead to 16-8 which was paused by three-straight Colby-Sawyer points. Another 3-0 advantage behind a kill by Skourtis and first year Ari Cuevas (Somersworth, N.H.) kept the match close at 17-14. Both teams would trade points before the Raiders closed things out by a 25-20 margin. 
  • The Chargers jumped ahead 4-2 in the second set behind two more kills for Cuevas. Rivier countered with three-straight to knot things back up. The Raiders used a 6-2 run to push the lead to 15-9 before a kill by junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) followed by a spike by Cuevas tried to get the home team back into it. The Raiders would strike back ending the set on a 8-1 run to win 25-17.
  • Colby-Sawyer started the third set strong with a 6-1 advantage behind two aces for junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.). The Raiders battled back chipping away at the lead with a 6-0 run to tie things up at 15-15. The Chargers would counter again with a 5-1 run to lead 22-20 later in the set and after kills by junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) and senior Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.) the teams were tied at 25-25. Majenski had a big kill to give the Chargers the lead, but Rivier closed things out with three-straight points.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Skourtis led the offense with nine kills to go with two digs. Majenski followed with seven kills and six digs. Cuevas added seven more kills with a pair of aces. 
  • Patnode stuffed the stat sheet with 21 assists, five digs and three kills.
  • Fontes had 17 digs to lead the defense. 
  • The Chargers currently sit in 13th place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoff picture with four conference matches to go.
Up Next: 
The Chargers will travel to Paxton for a tri-match against Anna Maria and Simmons on Friday.
