Fontes Reaches 1K Digs as Chargers Fall Short in Tri-Match

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team fell short in their home Tri-match falling to Emmanuel 0-3 (15-25, 20-25, 14-25) and to Bates College 0-3 (26-28, 21-25, 17-25).

Rapid Recap (Emmanuel):
  • The two teams would battle in the first set exchanging early points until a six-point run from the Saints would give them a 9-2 advantage. A kill from junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) would stop the run initially but another five-point run highlighted by s Wiktoria Galazyn service ace would put the Saints up 15-4. Junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) would serve an ace to keep the Chargers in the set 9-19 but a pair of kills from the Saints would finalize the first set victory.
  • The second set started early in the Saints favor as they jumped to an early 9-2 lead packing the stat sheet with kills. A kill from Mollberg would attempt to stop the run but the Saints would continue their dominance going up 17-5. Junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) would start the offensive shift notching a kill, followed by a service ace from Fontes bringing the score to 15-21. A string of kills and errors would finalize the set in the Saints favor.
  • The Saints would continue their point streak taking an early 6-1 lead in the third set capitalizing off of errors made by the Chargers. The Chargers would see their first offensive light from first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.) tabbing a kill. The kill from Skourtis would not threaten the Saints momentum as they would go on a six-point run to end the match.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mollberg led the offense with six kills and one assist.
  • Skourtis served two service aces, notched five kills and digs and one block.
  • Fontes led the defensive side with 13 digs, while junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) paced the passing with 17 assists.
Rapid Recap (Bates):
  • The two teams battled for the entirety of set one, exchanging points, runs and hustle plays throughout. Junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) started the set for the Chargers with a quick kill. The Chargers would find their first run to bring the score to 6-3 behind a kill from junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.). The Bobcats would respond taking a 12-9 lead off of three kills. Junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) who attempt to top the run with a kill of her own but the Bobcats would go up 17-12. A series of hustle plays by the Chargers would lead to a six-point run highlighted by five Majenski kills. In the end the Bobcats would string together enough plays to take the victory 28-26.
  • The battle continued between the two squads with the first offensive charge for the home team coming from first year Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.) who recorded a kill and set up teammate Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.) for a kill of her own. Bates would take a 11-8 lead before the Chargers were able to string together points to tie the set at 11. The Bobcats would jump ahead 18-13 off of a pair of service aces from Eden Lorin and Ellie Asada. First year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.) took these personal as she would then deliver a kill and two service aces of her own to bring the score to 17-20. The Bobcats would gain back momentum to take the set off of errors and a Sofia Castiglioni kill.
  • The Bobcats controlled more of the third set but the Chargers did not lose their hustle throughout. The visitors would jump ahead 4-1 before Skourtis would notch a kill and Bacon would serve an ace to bring the home team back in it. Bates would proceed to take a 14-6 lead over Colby-Sawyer until Majenski would line up for another kill and cause a three-point Charger run. The run would be the last of the Chargers luck as the Bobcats would run away with the final set.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Majenski led the offense with 12 kills, followed by Skourtis would put up eight kills and two aces.
  • Fontes had a career defensive match reaching the milestone of 1,000 career digs with her 11th dig of the match. She would notch 14 total in the match.
  • Patnode continued to lead the passing tabbing 19 assists, two aces and 13 digs,
