NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team dropped Wednesday evenings contest against Saint Joseph College of Maine in five sets (19-25, 14-25, 25-19, 25-19, 13-15).
Rapid Recap:
- The Monks jumped out to an early lead 3-0 over the home team with a kill from Larisa Comolli and a pair of attacking errors from the Chargers. The Chargers would respond with a run of their own highlightd by a kill from first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.). The teams would battle back and forth exchanging kills with junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) notching two kills in the exchange. The Monks would then go on a six point run with a pair of kills form Nadia Sixto and kill from Tamya Johnson. A service ace from junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) would get the momentum in the home team favor bringing the score to 15-20 but a kill from Hanna Webster would finalize the set.
- The Monks capitalized on the first set momentum and jumped to an early 10-2 lead off of a pair of kills from Maggie Sylvester. The Chargers would get a kill from first year Ari Cuevas (Somersworth, N.H.) to bring the score to 15-7 but the Monks did not take their foot off of the gas. A string of kills and a service ace would put the Monks up 22-10 before Cuevas would notch her second kill. The kill would not be enough to turn the tides as a service ace from Sixto would end the set.
- The Chargers responded in the third set jumping ahead 6-2 with a pair of kills from Mollberg and kill from first year Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.). The Monks would then find themselves on a run to take the lead 7-6. A response from the home team led by a kill from junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) would put them up 11-8 and the team would not look back. Bacon, Skourtis, and Cuevas would each register a kill as the Chargers went on to win set three 25-19.
- The momentum change pushed the Chargers into an early lead in the fourth set 7-3 with kills from Bacon and Cuevas. Cuevas would continue the offensive output tabbing a pair of service aces to put the Chargers up 10-4. The Monks would find their first run of the set with a pair of kills from Sixto to bring the score to 13-15 in favor of the Chargers. A service ace from Patnode and kill from Mollberg would finalize the Chargers victory.
- The fifth set was a battle between the two teams each notching kills and runs. The Monks would take the first run going up 5-2 with kills from Sixto and Comolli. The Chargers would battle back with a kill from Skourtis bringing the score to 9-10. A pair of service errors from the home team and a service ace from Sixto would finalize the Monks victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Mollberg and Skourtis led the attack for the Chargers each registering 13 kills.
- Patnode led the passing with 34 assists, a pair of aces, and 18 digs.
- Fontes put up big stats recording 34 digs on the evening, four assists and a pair of service aces to round out the stat sheet.
