WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team split in their Saturday tri-match in West Haven defeating Mitchell by a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 22-25,15-11) final before losing to the hosts University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) by a 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-16) final.
Rapid Recap (Mitchell):
- The Mariners jumped ahead to a 9-6 lead, but the Chargers quickly countered with a 13-1 run led by three kills by junior Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) and two kills by junior Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.). Two more Mollberg kills kept CSC in front by a 21-15 margin. Three kills by senior Abby Williams (Brentwood, N.H.) and another by Majenski closed things out by a 25-19 score.
- The second set went back and forth with the teams knotted at 13-13. The Mariners used two separate 4-1 spurts to jump the lead 21-16. A Mollberg kill and an ace by junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) kept the Chargers within striking distance, but Mitchell closed things out 25-21.
- In the third set the Mariners held a 5-3, before a 9-0 avalanche behind two aces by first year Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.) and two kills by first year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.) pushed the Chargers on top. Mitchell responded later in the set with a 11-consecutive points to take the lead back at 19-15, but Colby-Sawyer put down four points quickly behind two Mollberg kills and an ace by junior setter Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.). Colby-Sawyer won the race to 25 points, but the Mariners ran off three-straight to win the set 27-25.
- In the fourth set both teams ping ponged the lead back-and-forth with Mitchell in front by a 11-8 margin. Colby-Sawyer offense came alive with a 5-0 run sparked by Patnode with a kill, two aces and two assists. The teams were knotted again at 17-17, but another Charger spurt with two more kills by Majenski put the Chargers over the top by a 25-22 final.
- In the deciding set the Chargers jumped ahead by a 6-3 margin on two kills by Mollberg and another by Skourtis. Delaney continued to shine in the fifth set picking up four more kills as Colby-Sawyer closed things out by a 15-11 final.
Inside the Numbers:
- Mollberg led the offense with a career-best 20 kills on a .327 kill percentage. Katie added 11 digs.
- Majenski was next with 16 kills on a .273 percentage and eight digs, while Skourtis registered 13 kills and 10 digs.
- Patnode led the passing in the match with a season-high of 43 assists to go with 16 digs and four kills.
- Fontes continues to lead the defense with 30 more digs in the win.
Rapid Recap (University of Saint Joseph (Conn.)):
- In the first set the Chargers jumped ahead of the Bluejays, but the home team stormed back to lead 13-9. USJ held a 18-14 lead, but the Chargers bounced back with 11-straight to win the set.
- In the second set both teams traded points with a score of 9-9. The Chargers battled with a 6-1 run to take the lead on two Patnode aces and a pair of kills by Majenski. The Bluejays responded with a 6-1 run of their own to take the lead back, but a counter of four-straight with two aces by senior Maria Avila (Goffstown, N.H.). The Bluejays battled back to take the lead and the set by a 26-24 margin.
- The third set started with some Charger offense putting in the first nine points, but the home team battled back with nine-straight as well. Colby-Sawyer pushed the lead back to 17-10 on two kills by Mollberg. The lead was 24-18 in favor of CSC, but an 8-0 run by the home team helped the 26-24 set win.
- In the fourth set the Bluejays held a quick 12-8 advantage. Kills by Mollberg and Skourtis kept Colby-Sawyer within 16-14, but the Bluejays closed things out by a 25-16 margin.
Inside the Numbers:
- Mollberg led the offense again with 15 kills. Majenski was next with 13 kills followed by 11 for Skourtis.
- Patnode led the passing with 33 assists to go with 13 digs.
- Fontes added 13 digs of her own to go with five aces.
