Mitchell's Career-Best 24 Points Not Enough as Chargers Fall to Northern Vermont University - Lyndon

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team came up short against Northern Vermont University – Lyndon by a final score of 52-49 in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon. First year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) recorded a career-high 24 points to go along with seven rebounds in the Chargers defeat to the Hornets.

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers took an early 4-3 lead in the first quarter after first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) made a jumper and layup. Following a Hornets jumper, senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) knocked down her first three-pointer of the game to put the Chargers back up 7-5. The score remained close until sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) and sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) made back-to-back triples extending the Chargers advantage to 15-10. The Hornets would sneak in the last two points of the quarter off a layup by Kiara Mack to make it 15-12.
  • In the second quarter, the Chargers went on a 6-2 run that was propelled by sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) who finished home two layups. The Hornets responded by going on a 7-0 run taking back the lead with the score at 22-21. Molettieri drained her second three-ball of the game off the assist from sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) to give the Chargers a 24-22 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Holt opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer to extend the Chargers led to five points. The Hornets offensive continued to battle midway through the third quarter and was able to tie the game at 32-32 after a good layup from Riann Fortin. After going down 35-34 with 1:34 on the clock, Molettieri found the ball to Mitchell who finished a layup to put the Chargers back up 36-35.  
  • After back-and-forth action early in the fourth quarter, the Hornets once again took back the advantage going up 44-40 after Kadienne Whitcomb hit a triple. Mitchell went on to score the final nine points for the Chargers keeping the team within striking distance, however Hornets would take the victory after making crucial free throws at the end of the quarter winning by a final score of 52-49.
Stats & Figures:
  • Mitchell had an impressive day for the Chargers notching a new season-high 24 points (10-15 FG, 4-5 FT) along with seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
  • Holt ended the game with 10 points (3-14 FG, 2-9 3-FG, 2-2 FT) to go with three rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Molettieri followed behind with six points (2-5 FG, 2-4 3-FG), one rebound, and a pair of assists. Brewster also had seven rebounds for the Chargers along with four points (2-9 FG), one assist, and a block.
  • Fortin (6-10 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 4-4 FT) and Sage Smith (6-13 FG, 3-5 3-FG, 2-2 FT) each recorded 17 points apiece for the Hornets combining for 17 rebounds and six blocks.
  • The Chargers scored 17 points from turnovers and had an 11-5 advantage in steals over the Hornets.
