Holt's Career-Night Leads Chargers to 56-37 Victory Over Elms College

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team picked up a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory on Wednesday defeating Elms College by a 56-37 final. Sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) had a career-best 22 points to lead the charge for the visitors. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers took a quick 8-0 lead after a pair of layups by sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.), and one each from first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) and sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.). The Blazers stormed back with seven-straight points to cut the deficit to a single point, but a layup and a three by Holt kept the visitors up. Another layup by sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) and free throw by Brewster gave the Chargers a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. 
  • Mitchell kicked off the second quarter with another finish in the painted area, before the Elms College chipped away with to cut the lead to 18-14. The lead was trimmed to three-points before a 5-0 run capped off by an and-one finish by sophomore Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) put Colby-Sawyer back up 24-16. Both teams traded baskets at the tail-end of the quarter before a tip-in by Mitchell pushed the lead to eight points headed into the break. 
  • The Chargers soared out of the break to a 7-0 run highlighted by another five points by Holt to push the lead to 35-20. Another 8-0 run by the visitors with another six going to Holt pushed the lead to 20 points with 4:54 left in the third quarter. Molettieri knocked down a three from the corner to give Colby-Sawyer their biggest lead of the night, but a 7-0 counter from the Blazers cut the lead to 48-32 with one quarter remaining. 
  • A three by senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) kicked off the fourth quarter pushing the advantage back to 19. Brewster finished another tough layup followed by Molettieri ending the game with another triple to keep the Chargers on top for the 56-37 win. Colby-Sawyer played remarkable defense in the fourth quarter holding the Blazers to 2-17 shooting from the floor while also forcing three turnovers.

"It was a great first GNAC win", said sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine). "Our team's offense was flowing tonight and it was nice to see our hard work pay off. We found the hot hands and truly played 14 as 1. It was an all-around great day for the Chargers!"

Stats & Figures:
  • Holt ended the game with the 22 points (9-16 FG, 2-3 3-FG, 2-2 FT) to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Brewster followed with a double-double registering 11 points (5-9 FG, 1-2 FT) and 12 rebounds. Molettieri added nine points (3-12 FG, 2-8 3-FG, 1-2 FT), two rebounds and a block. 
  • Mikayler Patch led the home Blazers with 11 points (4-14 FG, 1-5 3-FG, 2-2 FT) and six rebounds. 
  • The Chargers dominated in the painted area with a 30-14 differential over Elms College as well as getting 12 points off turnovers.
Up Next: 
The Chargers will return home for the first time since November 12th, when they host Emmanuel College on Saturday with a 1:00 PM tip.
