Chargers Fall to Emmanuel College in Nail-Biter

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers women's basketball team fell in a heartbreaker on Saturday, dropping a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest to Emmanuel College by a 49-48 final. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • Colby-Sawyer jumped ahead 3-0 as sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) knocked down a transition three on a pass from sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.). The lead grew to 5-0 as senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) finished a lefty hook in the lane with 1:28 to go in the quarter. After a free throw by the Saints the Chargers grew the lead to 7-1 at the end of the first quarter as first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) finished a put back in the paint. 
  • In the second quarter the lead grew to 11 after a quick 5-0 run with a layup by sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt) followed by a jumper by Mitchell and a free throw by sophomore Holt. Colby-Sawyer continued its hot shooting going on a 11-0 run highlighted by three-straight triples by Raynowska, Lucertini and Holt after a layup by Emmanuel to get the lead to 23-3. After another layup later in the quarter by Mitchell the lead hit 22 points, but the Saints battled back to cut the game to 28-12 headed into the break. 
  • The lead blossomed to 20 again in the third as Mitchell and Holt added layups on assists by Brewster. The Saints chipped away with a 13-0 advantage halted by a free throw from Mitchell. The Saint continued its success in the third quarter to get the score to 33-29 headed for the final frame. 
  • Emmanuel wasn't finished knotting the game at 33-33 with 8:26 to go, but back-to-back buckets by Mitchell and Holt kept the Chargers in front. The lead grew to 40-34 with 6:03 remaining after free throws by Raynowska and Brewster, but the Saints battled back to tie the game at 44-44 with 3:48 left. Emmanuel took their first lead with 2:56 to play, but the Chargers tied the game up at 48-48 with 2:04 left after a three by Holt. The Saints netted a free throw to untie the game and on the last possession Holt's floater was just shy to give the Saints the win.
Stats & Figures:
  • Holt led the offense with another big day for Colby-Sawyer scoring 21 points (7-14 FG, 4-7 3-FG, 3-4 FT) to with four rebounds. Mitchell was the only other Charger in double-figures with 10 points (4-6 FG, 2-6 FT) to go with nine boards and three assists. Raynowska also added a quality day off the bench with eight points (2-5 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 3-4 FT), eight rebounds and a steal. Brewster tallied five points (2-8 FG, 1-4 FT), nine rebounds and five assists. 
  • Olivia Matela led the Saints with 12 points (4-18 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 2-3 FT), six steals and a pair of rebounds.
  • The Chargers defense held strong forcing the Saints to just 21.3% (16-75) from the field, while forcing 24 turnovers and blocking four shots. The Chargers shot 35.6% (16-45) from the floor and 33.3% (6-18) from deep.
